Something like a dozen of you still owe me mixes! Please try to get them to me by the deadline. If you cannot, please send me a PM to let me know that you are totally working on your mix and that it will be done by whenever.
Also: If your recipient is not crossed off on the first page and you have sent me a mix, please let me know! I am occasionally required to work while at work so I might have opened your PM but not forwarded or something. |

To whomever made my mix, thank you. It was well thought out, well put together and filled with good stuff. I'm not a good track-by-track reviewer, so please don't take my short comments personally. I very much enjoy the mix. Oh, if I were to guess I'm going to say my mix partner comes from New Zealand/Austrialia.
My partner must know me fairly well, or have pure dumb luck, because it was filled with music I enjoy (instrumentals, soft vocals, etc.). Awesome stuff. I wish I had more time for the review, but I'm out of town the next few days and won't have access to the files. 1: Nice voice, great melody. Guitar pick sound was a little strong, but the tone was great. Mucho gracias 2: Bubbles! Er, this track was rather forgettable. Music itself was nice, but I didn't like the vocals much for some reason 3: I dig quite a bit. This track reminds me of a band I used to see play in Austin quite a bit, same type of soft vocals and feedback-driven guitars. They never put out an album, but if they did it would've sounded similar to this. 4: Up-tempo instrumentals make me smile. This put a large smile on my face. 5: I hated this song when I first heard it, but it grew on me greatly. Eventually I had it stuck in my head for an entire afternoon. Thanks, asshole! 6: Sounds like a weird cross between Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Black Heart Processional. But, alas, not as good. 7: A happy-sounding tune. I generally like it, though it gets a bit repetitive as it progresses. 8: This chick has a great voice. Cool ambient music too boot. Nice song. 9: My favorite track on the mix. Really awesome sounds that created a big sound yet weren't overbearing. 10: Ehhh, I've heard this before methinks and am not a fan. Sorry. :/ 11: Everytime I heard the "lion roar," I laughed. Very much enjoyed this. Except the beginning had me lunging for my cell. 12: See track 4, but I like this more and enjoy the reverb. 13: This reminds me very much of Apples in Stereo, but I don't think it is. Regardless, it's a quality song. 14: Nice mellow song. I'll DL more when I get the track info. 15: Sorry, but this just didn't speak to me. :/ 16: This song should've been on the Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack, because it'd make a perfect fit. I dig it, myself. 17: Awesome! Kinda, although it made my head hurt eventually. 18: Good closing track, seemed to sum up the entire mix. I liked it and would like to know where to go for more on the artist. The link for this goodness: Quote:

I was forwarded the link to my mix a while back but with moving, lack of Internet and server errors, I just downloaded it this morning. I will post a review of it tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks, man - I had a good guess you were somewhere down under, to boot!
I'll check out many of those artists - I'm really only familiar with Animal Collective (thought not that song), Yo La Tengo and Codeine. |

Side A
Track 1: An old blues song, complete with the pops and hisses. I feel like I have heard the song before but maybe not the artist doing it. I find the voice sort of grating but I could see myself getting past it on subsequent listens. Track 2: At times this reminds me of Neil Young. It is like somebody rounded the hard edges off of his voice and the acoustic guitar and harmonica do not help. I really like this. Track 3: Lots of guitar effects, distractingly so. I am trying to figure out if the singer is actually saying anything or not. Do not like this at all. Track 4: Acoustic-y guitar with effects and some weird vocals. At times he sounds like he is singing along to a completely different song in headphones that I cannot hear while also playing random notes on guitar. Track 5: Another old blues song. I have heard this song before, I am almost positive but I remember the vocals being different. Maybe it was another artist. Track 6: A short song with lyrics I can't make out and way too much random noise. Track 7: Low-fi and sort of ... I don't know how to describe it. Not crazy about it but before it ends I sort of want to hear more. Track 8: Another nice acoustic song with floaty sort of vocals I can't make out. The end makes it a nice way to close out the first half. Side AA Track 1: This song reminds me of SP's "Spaced", though with a female vocalist. Track 2: Meg White drums, piano, and lots of ahhhhhhs. Weird, I sort of like this. Lasts a bit long though. Track 3: Another song with vocals that can't be made out. They are female and this song is over pretty quickly. With the tape hiss it was hard to make out even the music. Track 4: Sort of reminds me of experimental Philip Glass, or at least the stuff I have heard. I like it. Track 5: I can make out the lyrics! I have heard one of the lines before: "Now everytime I get the blues I walk the soles right off my shoes" but I am pretty sure it wasn't this song. I like this. Track 6: Another really low-fi sounding song. The production (or lack thereof) is sort of distracting but I like the vocals a lot. My favorite of the mix thus far. Track 7: Distorted guitar and what sounds like more ahhhhing. Oh wait, there are lyrics. I think? I can't understand anything. Track 8: I like the horns in this songs but that is about it. Just ... distracting. Track 9: Surf-y sounding song that I love. I guess, I lied, this is my favorite song on the mix. Excellent way to end it. Overall, I would probably give this mix a 6/10. The songs I liked, I really liked, but the songs I didn't like I sometimes found downright annoying. The little audio bits were a nice way to break up the songs but not really friendly for repeat listening. Also, I would have preferred the tracks to be broken up so I could go back and listen to them again without have to try to find out where they began. I am anxious to find out who some of the artists are, especially since this is the first mix I've gotten where I haven't known at least one or two of the songs / artists on it. |

I edited my review post with the link - sorry about not including it originally. To who gets my mix, I apologize. I didn't have much time to put serious thought into it and made a mix that featured stuff that looked like it'd appeal to you. Turns out a lot of it was stuff I listen to quite a bit.

it was all new zealand stuff, which was def cool and probably better for me because it opened me up to some bands i wouldve never listened to before, but in terms of quality this mix you made for sppunk is golden.

I actually did remember! I wish I had gotten around to listening to it earlier but had a lot going on at the time. I'm glad you filled it with stuff I hadn't heard. I had been meaning to acquire some MV+EE and Blind Willie McTell (eMusic has really opened me up to some great blues music) so good to know I like them. There are a handful of others I will have to look into as well.

Cool. I didn't have a theme really, I just picked a bunch of my favorite tracks from stuff I've been listening to lately. I really wanted to cram more old-timey stuff on it, but that just ends up with me making an old-timey mix.
I would recommend Gettin Gone by MV & EE, that Hush Arbors song is from his first cdr reissued on digitalis, and the Real Estate song is from the 7" if you're poking around emusic. |

Looking back, I guess I did have a theme. I used the technique of having all the song titles act as a narrative. My grandma sez that's the way my grandpa used to make mixes for her.
