btw I've been thinking about this all year, and I am pretty sure writing utensils is the best way to word this. Writing implements is also good but writing instruments, as was suggested, does not sound correct.

In grade school they thought I was retarded because it was really difficult for me write

But then it didn't make sense that I could read well

Turns out the problem is my fine motor skills are poor, I also find it weirdly difficult to tie my shoes or button my clothes

Writing by hand is excruciating for me

so that basically explains why you love people who can't play instruments

it's like a sorority of people who can't button their clothes yet chose to pick up the guitar

Youd think it'd make playing guitar basically impossible but frets are big, you do not use fine motor skills for it

Me sucking at guitar has nothing to do with me being reduced to a 3 year old every time I have to tie my shoes in other words

This is quite common these days, because children engage in more screen time and limited fine motor activities, and for some weird reason, parents are usually more concerned with their kids reading than they are with them writing.

My younger brother had a horrible time writing and fell behind at school, and never really recovered. So I was aware that kids in our family would likely have a hard time writing, and started them using 'correct' pencil grip and letter formation for about a year before they started school, so that it wouldn't all be totally new to them. But I also encouraged fine motor activities like craft (cutting, sticking, painting etc.), play dough, sand, lego, etc.

A lot of these previously 'normal' activities are uncommon now because more parents are working and have less time to spend engaging in activities like that with their kids, and cleaning up after them, and taking them to the park where they strengthen their hand grip on equipment, etc.

Partly because it's so much easier and cleaner to put on netflix/youtube or get them on the computer or iPad or whatever.

People are tired. Your parents were tired.

my penmanship is pretty boss and that especially includes my cursive. some pens bring out the beauty more than others.

and btw, you can read how i feel about writing utensils in the chat thread since i inspired this one...

and another btw, where i work some girl no older than 20 wanted to leave a comment for the park district and was dumb enough to ask, "can people here read cursive?" if i hadn't been working i would have made her feel stupid but i just said, "yep, everyone here is familiar with it." but that dummy ended up writing in print anyway. in hindsight i should not have entertained that dumb question and responded with, "you mean that squiggly writing? no, you're the only one."

i saw the cursive she had begun to write and it was fucking ugly. what-ever.

No I mean I saw a specialist at a young age and was diagnosed with both disgraphia and useless fine motor skills

On the bright side they also concluded my natural IQ would make these things moot

They actually said people with exceedingly high intelligence in some form often will develop such quirks

my handwriting is terrible but sometimes it is ok. I'm not sure exactly why sometimes my hand is so much steadier than others. Either way it's not really relevant. Having good handwriting is an obsolete skill for the vast majority of people.

not really disputing this, as sadly it is probably true, but it's horrendously sad to me that nobody appreciates or is even interested in good penmanship anymore, because fucking touchscreens.

Yes, this is what they say to kids and their parents, when they're referred to specialists after their teachers find that they are unable to write at the expected standard. And the usual reason for this is a limited exposure to activities that are necessary for healthy human development, and over-exposure to screen based activities.

It's not entirely true. We're beginning to find that not being able to take written notes beshittens academic performance.

Sydney's top private school has recently pulled classroom laptops for this reason.

Taking good notes and having good handwriting are not correlated in my experience. I take dope notes but my handwriting is bad.

I mean physically not being able to write is a different issue but I don't think it's that common... I worked with kids who just could not write legibly and thus had accommodations to type or to have an adult scribe for them... but usually those kids have other learning and intellectual disabilities.

I think the article suggests that for most students, screens become barriers between students and their peers/teachers.

There are students who have trouble handwriting and benefit from being able to type notes. And that is probably something on the rise. But 'normal' learners do better when they take handwritten notes, apparently.

I personally remember things much better if I take handwritten notes. I've always assumed it has something to do with the way your brain encodes new memories (maybe typing allows for transcription without processing what the words mean?) but I dunno

but again I don't see the link to handwriting. Kids can take handwritten notes with bad handwriting just as well as their peers with good handwriting in most cases. I've also encountered a fair number of students (usually girls, not sure why that is) whose ability to complete work in a timely fashion is somewhat inhibited by their faithfulness to perfect script. Female students tend to have better handwriting in general IME

yeah I've made that tentative assumption, too. I don't think quality of handwriting matters much, but being able to write by hand is still a necessary skill, IMO.

People talk about 'doctor's handwriting', and they'd have us believe doctors are some of the best and brightest in society, so I don't think many people assume that sloppy writing = sloppy note taking.
