I think most people connect with a certain time period or era of a band/singer's career. I would wager that most on this board and probably the o-board connected with the 90s stuff because that's when they/he was most prolific with releases and was getting the most radio play (listening to a single led one to the album, and so on and so forth). I checked in for Zeitgeist-Oceania and connected with that time period and have since checked out (Monuments wasn't shitty but it wasn't for me and so I didn't pay it too much attention). I'm not going to artificially fake some sort of nostalgic emotion to the 90s stuff because that's not genuine, I don't connect with the aesthetic of MCIS or what SP represented back then. |

got into 'em in 2007, post-zeitgeist release
my friends were all talking about it, saying it was "alright" but basically they'd been fans for a little while before & for about 2 years up until that i had been asked more than once whether i was a fan. i wasn't, i had a weird impression of them for a variety of reasons (stories about concerts, renditions of bullet with butterfly wings, couple of other things i suppose) despite not having sat down & listened to an entire album at that point. one thing i specifically remember for some reason is that in 2005, before i had any real interest in the band i was in an fye or sound warehouse (whichever it was called at the time) & in the center there was a little listening section with copies of various new albums that were on sale & whatnot. the future embrace was one of them, & for whatever reason i had the interest to go look at it, listen to a few samples even i think, & considered buying it that day. TFE could have conceivably been my intro to the pumpkins - as it is though i got rotten apples in 2007 after enough urging by one of my best friend's girlfriends at the time listening to that was an odd experience, i felt like i'd never actually heard or at least listened to music like that before. i'd been into my bloody valentine & whatnot but, the stuff particularly from the gish era was a huge turn into rock territory that was different from the primal scream & depeche mode i'd been listening to the year before. i remember thinking specifically about how much lower the vocals sounded in the mix than the majority of tunes i'd been listening to, & eventually by the time i heard 1979 - one of those songs i'd heard a million times but had never connected it to an artist - it was just like "wow, this band has a whole lot more going for them than i ever would have thought before" mellon collie, adore, siamese dream, machina, zeitgeist, pisces, gish & aeroplane was my order from there i think there was a time when the reaction from even their hardcore fans was so negative on zeit i almost didn't even want to listen to it, thought it would just "sully" my enjoyment of the band or something |

i got my girlfriend mellon collie for christmas. she keeps holding off on listening for some reason but says she'll get to it at some point. i'm very interested in seeing how this turns out, because i've never bought somebody an album, and i just gave my favorite one of all time to my girlfriend. it's really gonna suck if she doesn't like it, but if she does, hopefully it will open her up to more of SP's music

Ok, im 19. I found TSP sometime around the release of TBK Vol. 3. So, 2010-2011
This being the digital age, I of course got it all at once. I listened to Gish first because it was the first album. I had no prior idea or opinion of any of SP's music whatsoever. I got rocked the fuck out and immediately loved them. From there I fell in love with Siamese Dream and for a year or so I must've heard it about a hundred times - it just does not stop being great. Ever. The next year I got into MC and TAFH and did the same thing with them listening to them each a million times because they just hooked me. I didn't purposefully listen to everything chronologically like this - its just how the stuff happenned to hit me. I never really got into Adore until MUCH recently, like 2013 or so. But, no pun intended, I adore Adore and its probably my 2nd favorite SP album behind MC. The first SP show I saw video of was the Utrecht 2000 gig. That show is metal as fuck and looks badass with all the white light everywhere. This got me into the Machina era and I collected every Machina tour recording listenable, be it AUD or FM or SBD. Over a month or two I listened to almost the entire tour and I really got a great appreciation for the albums and the material. Zeitgeist was the first physical SP cd I owned. Not much to say. I understand the hate, but I personally enjoy it every once in a great while. I proceeded to follow and purchase the releases of the deluxe editions. I never owned a single SP album so it was the perfect opportunity to get them. I remember all the build up to Oceania. It came out and I was freakin stoked as it was built up to be the comeback of the friggin millenia or something. Oceania was a huge grower on me. It's definitely not my favorite SP album by any means, but I think its definitely the best SP album since Machina or perhaps Adore. Its just rather boring. Then again, I got it the same day Rush's Clockwork Angels came out (which I listened to 5 times in a row that day) so that probably influenced my opinion as well when I had Rush in my other ear kicking ass. I've yet to really get into MFAE. Ive listened to it once or twice. My only major complaint on first listens is that its at least ten minute too fucking short. Come one b0lly.... |

MTAE just seems cheesier than anything he's ever done. It doesn't feel right listening to it.

Love to read this stories.
Questions for the dear noobs: Dont you feel MCIS sound/vibe too much outdated? Or much more outdated than Machinas or Adore for example? You barely mention Machina II. Are you awere it does exist? It is a fuckin album of pretty, raw and unique songs! Dont forget it. |

I got into them in April 2011 i think. I had heard of the band before because of the Simpsons episode they were in, my first exposure was a Dead Space 2 trailer at the cinema with BWBW so i asked my music buff friend who the band was. Went home and fell in love. I remember downloading BWBW, 1979 and Rhinoceros on my ipod and listened to them a few times a day for a few weeks. TBK was being released at the time when i was looking up what they were doing currently so i downloaded those songs (Lighning Strikes being the most recent). Kind of liked them, but way too synthy for my tastes and cheesy, Owata was unbearable even as a new fan.
Then i dove into their albums chronologically (same way ive done it for all bands). Gish - Blew me the fuck away, best album i ever heard at! (Still love it, but pretty low on my SP rank. SD - same as above, but higher rank MCIS - First double ablum i owned, i couldnt wrap my head around the sheer amount of songs and variety, took me about a year to fully appreciate it Adore - I was shocked by such a drastic change in style, but i really liked it. Took me until a year ago to really love it, hit me like a tonne of bricks one day. Best album ever made Machina - Found it very weird, loved some songs, hated others. Grew on me fast and was the first SP album to take the crown as my favourite (2nd place now) Machina II - Same as above, but liked it a bit more to begin with. Took over as favourite for a while before MI returning to top spot (my 3rd favourite) Zeitgeist - Thought it was pretty good, took me a while to get into it, grew on me more over time. Great album (sorry) PI, TAFH and Judas O were bought then, loved them all. I couldnt believe how strong their b sides were. Oceania - This was really exciting my new favourite band releasing a new album! Listened to that itunes stream loads, played the CD constantly, fucking loved it. Then the honeymoon period was over and i realised its nowhere near as good as the old stuff. I estimate i listened to it 50 or 60 times the first month it was out, still my most listened to pumpkins album, that needs to change. I grew to appreciate it more over time. Fond memories attached this time period though MTAE - loved it at first, super disappointed right now. What the hell were they thinking? Still love the hell out of Dorian and Anaise, a couple others are great but the rest, not so good... |

I tend to think of Machina as one big whole, so if I ever mention Machina, unless i specifically say Pt. II, im just referring to it all together. Also, I think MCIS holds up great today. It really doesn't sound dated whatsoever. |

Imagine Dragons MEGAFAN here
Upon listening to their hit single "Demons" on Spotify for the 3,000th time I saw that Spotify was suggesting I might like "Being Beige" by Smashing Pumpkins "Smashing Pumpkins" is a funny but really clever name like "Imagine Dragons" so naturally I clicked on it and lol here I am, what do I listen to next, what are their other good slow jams |

Seriously, production-wise and all it still sounds fucking good. I'm always picking the tracks apart as I listen trying to hear all the different sounds and parts layered in there.
Adore sounds great as well, except for the dated-ness of some of the more electronic-based sounds. Fuck, they all still sound great. Siamese Dream sounds as good as anything put out since. |

Good to know the new fans recognize as well the SP1 is better than SPx stuff.
Conclusion: we (old fans) are not crazy or stuck in the past or linked nostalgically or emotionally to the old stuff. |

Right. Can confirm that Billy's accusations of his fanbase for that purpose are completely off the walls. I think he'd be surprised at the reception a Siamese Dream 2 would get (ya know, except for the "hypocrite" bashing he'd get for going back on what he said by making it).

I disagree. I think if he truly set out to do it, he could. Obviously he couldn't perform a SD2 vocally as we could all hope, but he can definitely write it.

This is a good idea for a thread and I might read it someday.
I began in 2000 (other than knowing singles) so I can probably relate a bit. |

I think Oceania is the closest thing we'll ever get to an SD2... for better or worse

"Eye" sounded quite "cheap" and like a demo even at the time. I mean, compared to the kind of electronica that was around at the time, or to what bands like Depeche Mode were doing in the 90s, it sounds more like Billy toying around with electronics than the work of full-fledged electronica artist Which is what i've always felt like about "Adore" as well, and it's part of its beauty. There's always something a bit clumsy whenever Billy wants to do something electronic. |

Sadly, we will never know how many young people NEVER became fans after hearing "Zeitgeist" or "Oceania" And there are probably quite a lot of people, considering how "Oceania" was marketed as a masterpiece before it was even out.
