parentheses bit took the heat on that one down a few degrees

I listened to Glider EP today & don't think i've ever felt quite as "surrounded" by the music as I did then. I don't know if I'm listening to music differently or someone slipped something into my Subway sandwich

I wanted to claim Ride is the best but then I started questioning if I actually believe that, and the answer is no. I don't think any of the other originalish shoegaze bands are even in the same league as MBV. HOWEVER people still tend to overlook Ride

MBV is so good that it's hard for me to appreciate other shoegaze

Ride, MBV and Slowdive hit home for me as far as shoegaze is concerned

also, Souvlaki is equal to Loveless

also, SD is the best album ever

Definitely. I love Ride. MBV is better, but Ride has made some amazing music. I've Going Blank Again on repeat these days.

Well okay Loveless is just a tad better. I have a soft spot for Souvlaki because it introduced me to shoegaze, I suppose.

I do still think that SD is one of the best albums ever created

I got into Loveless via Siamese Dream, then heard the phrase “shoegaze” so was like YES if this is shoegaze here on Loveless GIMME GIMME GIMME GEH GEH GIMME ALLLLLLLL THAT

But quickly discovered (like you) that everything else called “shoegaze” isn’t even in the same hemisphere to what Loveless does. So for me Loveless is its own genre, while the term “shoegaze” means a bunch of by-the-numbers pop tunes run thru numerous effects pedals

first time i listened to loveless i was super stoned in the dark and i didn't plug my headphones fully into the discman. there was no singing just rhythm guitars. but i was too stoned to figure it out. still sounded pretty good tbh.

next morning i plugged in and was like "woah"

I accidentally discovered that trick once. It confused the hell out of me, and I tried it with a bunch of different albums to see how they would sound. It took me a while to figure out what had happened.

The headphones would have been connected in a way that for some reason, one of the stereo channels was inverted and combined with the other, which cancels out everything that's panned to the middle. As it turns out, Loveless is a great album for trying this.

It sounds much better if you edit the audio yourself in a program like Audacity, rather than fucking with your headphones. (Much as it might be tempting to fuck your headphones while listening to Loveless)

Whenever I get stoned, the only thing I want to listen to is either Siamese Dream or Loveless. If I put on just about anything else, I end up turning it off and putting on one of those two albums.

I've had a pretty similar journey. Trying to find anything that is similar to Loveless is an exercise in disappointment.

Catherine Wheel was the best shoegaze band. A+ songwriting and guitar work

I know we're allowed, as humans, to have really dumb and wrong opinions, but why would you choose to have one?

Speaking of pop tunes run through guitar effects, if anyone in this thread has for whatever reason never listened to Heaven or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins, get on that immediately

Somehow I feel like it's a hidden 3rd album in this Lovey/Siamese comparison, but more importantly, s'just fuckin' great...

As far as shoegaze in general, i've heard more from the 2000s & onward that felt MBV-inspired, as opposed to their contemporaries who I always thought were more on the "dream pop" side of things

There was a song from a band called Airiel I heard years ago & thought was pretty good, tho I never heard the full album - take it or leave it!
