Default Anybody here actually plan on retiring?

Sometime in the past two years I accepted the fact that I'm basically going to work full time until I die.

I'm not sure if I'm even allowed to retire but If I do I have a few hundred euros a year to live from. My lifestyle determines my death style.

a few hundreds of euros is an optimistic scenario. i'll just end up in the gutter for the next 40 years I guess.

If I live to see it, yes. I've been saving for retirement for ten years now. It's never too late, everyone! Start an IRA and/or 401K today!

I see myself retiring from whatever industry I ultimately settle in (I am not sure I want to stay in banking) around age 60-something and taking up part time, easy work from there. I don't think I could do the whole "retire and sit around in my poopy pants all day" thing.

Does Trots plan on retiring? Or will he just ask to be banned from his job?

I think whatever beef he had with me was more "Here's someone I don't have a history with, so I can safely attack him." He crossed the line when he started fucking with legit posters like DK, LaBelle and FoolofaPoots.

I've realized the only way I can will be to kind of drop out of society and minimize and maybe hope to die younger and quicker than some long drawn out poor existence. I want to earn enough to buy something, drop a container on it and start building something out of whatever and hope I can figure a plan to sustain some sort of minimal survival.

i have some savings but but i think if i were to really dream about retiring and not having to work anymore i'd be in for a very bitter disappointment

tbqh i don't think about the future much and am pretty convinced i'll kill myself at one point before i really ever have to deal with those decisions anyway

i have 28 years with my company. i plan to leave when I'm 60, at which point I'll have 42 years in.
That sounds crazy but we have retirement parties at my office every week for boomers who have more years than that. We just had a guy retire with 57 years in. I work every day with people i grew up with and went to high school with. I don't think there are many companies like that left in the world. I'm incredibly lucky. I have a pension. And i've been able to save a lot of money.

My parents are 60+ and still working so it doesn't look good for me either. My mom has a pension that goes directly to my dad's account where he squanders it. My siblings are leaches that don't even try to be any sort of self sufficient (baring that, I think ought to be helpful but they aren't). They'll also probably always have my sister as a dependent because of her illness. My goal is to live a small life so hopefully even if I do have to work until I die it will be casual

my dad had to retire in his 50s when he became disabled. He was lucky since he had a union job and a pension. When my step mother died a few years ago he was actually in OK shape financially, as he got my Step mother's pension. When my dad died this year he was completely broke. He got married a few years ago to his last wife, who bankrupted him, starting with his house, which they had to sell last year. Now he's dead so it doesn't fucking matter anymore.

My mother retired a couple of years ago. She had to work until she was 67 so she could get full SS benefits. She and my stepfather, who's now disabbled and hasn't been able to work for years, couldn't afford for her to retire sooner. She spent her entire adult life sewing in factories and it fucked up her health. But at least she deoesn't have to work anymore.

I'm only working up to when I make 10 million reais. That's my magic number for retiring.

Any minute now.

right on.

i decided to start learning a trade last year because for someone like me, that's the most stable form of social security. it seems a little foolish and overly optimistic to believe that your retirement fund is going to be there for you until you die. we echo-boomers are not having kids at a rate that will support our SS checks at any meaningful level. so when social security implodes, or the financial markets inevitably crash, all you're gonna have is your brain, your body and your tools to feed yourself.

I watched Herzog's Happy People recently, and a similar sentiment is better expressed by Dmitry:

"As they say, you can take away anything from a man- his wealth and health and suchlike- but you can't take away his craftsman skills. Once you learn a trade, you always know your trade for the rest of your life."

What trade, if you don't mind me asking?

I see a chiropractor every few months when my neck issues flare up. I'd say this guy is great at his craft but he is about sixty and because it requires some long hours of physical exertion, the wear and tear has really caught up to him and he's unsure how much longer he can do it.

He spends nearly every session complaining to me about his financial situation and so I try to brainstorm with him on the various moves he can make, but it's a tough situation.

He is learning photography now which he enjoys and can hopefully make some supplemental income from by pairing up with a real estate agent friend who lists houses.

School loans and the interest on them are this guys downfall, combined with the high cost of living here which have made it impossible so far for him to get on top of this. In his case moving to a new area may need to be part of the solution. :/

Best of luck. I had to cash in most of my IRA when I got divorced/reset my life. It'll take time to bounce back, but hang in there.
