It could be he's doing that, but the simple answer is that he's just shitting out lyrics and they have no meaning for himself much less others.

Either way it doesn't change the fact that the music is lame. Melodies are weak like Ukraine.

listening to the new album for like the 3rd time. It's not as good as Honeybear, like it suffers from lack of conciseness. But it also has some of his best songs. He's really really good at the 70s pop thing like god damn some of these songs are produced and orchestrated with so much skill they could pass as early Elton John.

guy has an absolutely gorgeous fucking voice too, and it seems like it's only getting stronger

actually this does bother me. I know it's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek but I guess it still rubs me the wrong way sometimes. For instance, The Night Josh Tillman is one of his best songs but the last line, "I obliged later on when you begged me to choke you," always leaves me feeling like dude maybe just don't say that?

this tho

I enjoyed Fear Fun and Honeybear a lot- his new album is pretty boring. That said, he's really good live. I get the impression that the whole personality is all a put on but can't say for sure. At this point, I'm too old to care.

I'm gonna see him again in Asheville in September. I need to grow my beard out more and get ready to crush some craft beers before the show. Also on the checklist, tighter pants.

I checked out some of his stuff. It sounds like he's trying to rehash Pavements "Range Life" over and over again but instead of singing it cool he sings like a jackass. Especially with songs like "I'm writing a novel"... Just hipster rubbish.

it's similar in many ways. It's taking a traditional, country, bluesy jangle and then doing the pavement thing were it sounds like it could all fall apart at any second but just keeps on jangling away with the stream of consciousness lyrics. It's pretty much the archetype for a lot of these hipster acts.

I mean it's even got that old-timey bluesy-rock and roll piano ironically plinking away.

It's all so contrived bro.
