Default Need some help finding a band...

Yesterday I went to Rough Trade East in London with friends of mine. Under "staff picks" I listened to a band that sounded pretty amazing. I didn't know them. Unfortunately I listened to them on one of these multi-CD stations and ended up thinking the music was from some other band. I have been trying to find out who I really listened to, without success.

Since a friend told me that he was not surprised by me liking the band given my past obsession with The Smashing Pumpkins, I thought I would ask you guys if you know the band. Unfortunately all I have is a verbal description, of their music, so here goes:

The album I listened to must be a more recent release. The intro track has a build-up similar to the one in Filter's Title of Record, but shorter, and soon there is a loud, distorted, pretty driving bass. Quickly there is a wall of distorted guitars, the drums are a bit punky, and guitars later become a bit disssonant. While the vocals (male) weren't buried in the mix, they weren't very prominent either. I told my friend that the music sounded like how I would like the Foo Fighters to be. The track sounded a bit like a more unleashed unleashed version of "Enough Space" from the Color and the Shape album.

Sorry that I haven't got more, and sorry if by my description this sounds like the beginning of every other alternative rock album. I really liked what I heard though and want to explore further.

Does anyone have an idea which band, and which recently released album I may be talking about? Thanks!

No. I know Muse and their new album starts with a dozen Mathew Bellamys singing "DEAD INSIDE!".

No, none of the suggestions. As I said, it is probably a very new album, i.e. released this year.

Why nlt call the store? I may end up doing that, but perhaps others enjoy the challenge?

Anyway, thanks to those who gave it a go. Sunbather sounds pretty cool btw.

If memory serves, the voice is a mix of early Grohl, Foo Fighters self-titled era, and perhaps the guy from ...And They Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. The vocals were not very polished.

CAIC, they obviously hate your guts because they helped me find the band.

I was listening to METZ, a noise rock band signed under Sub Pop. My description of the music was not completely accurate, but here goes:

They have a good sound, but listening to them again they lack a bit substance. Good band though.

The other band in the same listening station is Wand, and I am currently listening to their new album Golem. So far I like it quite a bit, and more than METZ.

Thanks to all who made suggestions.

Well, I called them to inform them that a lot of people with their own motivations for doing so will instruct them to respond to your call in all sorts of ways, some of them repugnant, some of them quite tempting, and should they find themselves deeply conflicted and confused about the correct action to take, they should ignore everyone, look inside of themselves, and do what their hearts tell them is right.

I then showed them a song that I like to listen to in times of inner turmoil, in hopes that they may find the peace of mind that I enjoy these days. The song is so catchy that many may simply be taken away by the infectious tune and neglect to digest it's message, so I told them to really pay attention and reflect upon the lyrics of Outkast's "Hey Yeah." They are reproduced below for your consideration:

[Intro]
One, two, three, uh!

[Verse One - Andre 3000]
My baby don't mess around
Because she loves me so
And this I know for sure.
Uh, But does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me
Walk out the door.
Don't try to fight the feelin'
'Cause the thought alone is killing me right now..
Uh, thank god for mom and dad
For sticking two together
'Cause we don't know how...
UH!

[Chorus:]
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.

[Verse Two - Andre 3000]
You think you've got it
Oh, you think you've got it
But got it just don't get it
'Til there's nothing at all
We get together
Oh, we get together
But separate's always better when there's feelings involved
If what they say is "Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, then what makes, then what makes
Then what makes, what makes, what makes love the exception
So why you, why you
Why you, why you, why you are we so in denial
When we know we're not happy here...
Y'all don't want me here you just wanna dance

[Chorus]
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (OH OH)
Hey... ya. (Don't want to meet your daddy, OH OH)
Hey ya. (Just want you in my Caddy OH OH)
Hey... ya. (OH OH, don't want to meet yo' mama OH OH)
Hey ya. (Just want to make you cumma OH OH)
Hey... ya. (I'm, OH OH I'm, OH OH)
Hey ya. (I'm just being honest OH OH, I'm just being honest)

[Bridge - Andre 3000]
Hey, alright now
Alright now fellas yeah!
Now what's cooler than bein' cool?
(ICE COLD!)
I can't hear ya'
I say what's, what's cooler than bein' cool?
(ICE COLD!)
Whooo...
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright,
OK now ladies (yeah!)
Now we gon' break this thing down in just a few seconds
Now don't have me to break this thing down for nothing
Now I wanna see y'all on your baddest behavior
Lend me some sugar, I am your neighbor
Uh!Here we go know...
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it like a Polaroid Picture, shake it, shake it
Shh you got to, shake it, shh shake it, shake it, got to shake it
(Shake it sugar) shake it like a Polaroid Picture

[Verse Three - Andre 3000 (Repeating "Shake it" in background)]
Now all Beyoncé's and Lucy Liu's
And baby dolls, get on the floor
(Get on the floor)
You know what to do.
You know what to do.
You know what to do!

[Chorus]
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (OH OH)
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (Uh oh, Hey ya)
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (Uh, uh, OH OH)
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (OH OH)

[Chorus continues until fade]
