Those AOL session are amazing, the drums are clearly audible, the shitty production is gone, Billy's voice doesn't sound as produced... these are definitely the best versions of the respective zeitgeist songs if for no other reason than the loudness of the drums

that it is

Especially the fill leading into it, a triplet rundown in 4/4 then immediately going into 6/8

Jimmy is a total beast right throughout Cash Car Star. Good example of a skilled drummer turning a fairly average song into something fucking great.

My favorite Jimmy moment is his drum assault in the last few minutes of Mary Star of the Sea. it is breath-taking.

So that's what it's like to be on stage behind Jimmy at a Smashing Pumpkins show in 1993.

I knew Jimmy always kept his toms fairly flat an close together but that video makes them look like toys. Jesus it looks like it would be uncomfortably cramped.

That's a loud crowd. Do you think Billy's ever up on stage these days and misses the constant screaming?

That is one of the better things I've ever seen. If only a whole show was filmed like this.

That's really cool, I've never seen a show taped from that perspective before. On top of hearing Jimmy REALLY clearly to the point it sounds like an isolated drum track, it gives you some sense of what it must actually look and sound like to the band while onstage. I've been onstage but not like that; however, I think that not really seeing the audience is a universal.

In the next couple of months, Catalano will release the first of three recordings he made last year.

"Old Skool" pairs him with pianist Scott Williams in duo settings of jazz standards, such as "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Our Love is Here to Stay," plus an original homage to one of Catalano's heroes, Von Freeman: "Blues for Vonski."

After that will come a duo CD with the inimitable Chicago drummer Paul Wertico and a trio album with former Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and Brand X bassist Percy Jones, which promises to be a high-powered, high-energy affair.

"It's definitely a jazz album," says Catalano of his partnership with Chamberlin and Jones. "Yeah, Percy has played on Brian Eno records, and Chamberlin with the Smashing Pumpkins, obviously, but they're such good players in a jazz setting too.

"I knew it would be a powerful trio, but it has ballads also."

I'm sure it doesn't sound as weird from where Jimmy's sitting, although he probably only had Billy's voice and guitar piped through his monitor. There aren't any monitors pointing at where the camera guy is.

Well not only that but the majority of the amplification from the stage is directed straight out into the crowd. Obviously the mic, being where it was, is going to exaggerate that effect.
