What happened between Billy and Fender?

I'm not particularly surprised, but I don't think I ever heard any story behind this |

His strat was pretty cool but seemed to be discontinued after a pretty short time period. I guess he was pissed about that.

I'll do a clickbait piece on Billy's comments sometime soon, maybe Fender will respond.

Around that time they had a ton of signature series guitars. They discontinued a ton of them at the same time. Sadly, however, they are back up to a ridiculous number across their different model lines

I wonder if it revolved around the fact that his Strat revolved around customers "finding their own voice" rather than buying Corgan's (which I assume is what most sigs do)

I read somewhere at some point (maybe even on this board) that Corgan thought Fender did not promote it as well as they should have. Maybe he felt other models got more marketing attention and sold better. Personally I think Bill's signature model was half baked.
It was basically a regular ass looking strat with DiMarzio humbuckers in it, and the humbuckers were about the same as the stock humbuckers they said to have "modified" anyway. What's bizarre to me is I remember some video where Corgan says something like "This model is the closest sounding thing I could get to my old Gish era strat that was lost." Like how? His Gish era strat had 70s era Fender single coils how the fuck is a DiMarzio loaded humbucker guitar going to sound anything like it? For a Corgan signature model they should have painted a couple models really crazy and the guitars should have come with the Lace Sensors. I had a set of the BC DiMarzios in my strat and honestly they weren't all that impressive. In fact, the bridge pickup was unusable for my ears. They ended up on ebay. Why the Lace Sensors weren't in that guitar is beyond me. |

Yeah I agree. I guess they also wanted to keep it affordable as the custom shop creating something like that middle guitar would be expensive (though really cool). But yeah, Lace Sensors would be a must on a Bill signature. Anyone who wants to "find their own sound" like Bill said will just go about experimenting with different pickups anyway

I never got one of the signature guitars but I did order a set of those pick-ups
Put it in a strat bod that I ended up using the neck from for a different guitar, and then when I went back to look for the body that had the pick-ups in it, it had mysteriously disappeared Was I visited by a sneaking Billbo in the night? |

I had the Dimarzio Corgan pickup set in a strat, and yeah they sounded nothing like Gish. The bridge pickup was the bassiest bridge pickup I've ever heard. The pickups were meant for Zeitgeist high gain sludge. Removed them pretty quick.

That QA is hilarious. His reasoning for removing Zwan, TFE, and Zeitgeist from streaming is childish and a typical “Billy takes his ball and goes home” move.

Billy's "Bat Strat" is just a stock '57 re-issue that he had re-configured to resemble the same bridge and pickup configuration as a Fender Strat Deluxe Plus - which featured the modern bridge + saddles, and the Blue-Silver-Red lace sensor pickups. There was nothing unique or rare about that setup. Billy could've easily just picked up an off-the-shelf Deluxe Plus and gotten the exact same sound on Siamese Dream. The only difference is the pickguard, and probably the feel of the neck. And Billy did add that drop-d switch to the low-E tuner. But that's not really anything you would call a unique "modification". No fancy wiring, no hand-wound pickups, no rare woods, etc. I would guess that this might have played a part in Billy choosing to bypass the lace sensors and go for custom wiring and pickups, to give the impression that his signature guitar was made to his "specifications" (and so, impossible to get any other way). Hard to make that case if everyone can already buy a guitar with the exact same setup as the one you really use. Billy wasn't the only one doing the lace sensors thing either. Kim Deal of the Breeders was using a Fender Ultra, which had the dual red lace sensor in the bridge. A few years later Jonny Greenwood started using the Telecaster Plus, which had the same dual red lace sensor in the bridge too. |

You can add it to any electric guitar, as long as you have space on the headstock for it. The locking mechanism is in the tuner itself. It works by releasing the tension on the string, enough to go from E down to D. Flip the switch and you're back to E. I can't remember if he even had that drop-d tuner on his Bat Strat during the original lineup years.
