I have a D8 which is really similar, so I'll answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

1. No

2. You'll want to adjust the volume manually.

3. Always have your mic sensativity on low. Almost any show you could possibly record will be loud enough that you don't need high sensativity.

4. 7pin > optical? I don't know, cause I use 7pin > coax. Any digital cable is fairly expensive, though.

Hope this helps.

I'll add to brandon's post. The mic hi/low setting only works for mic in. It makes no difference line in. That being said, always have it in the low setting. You will -never- ever need it to be in the high position unless you're recording something like a lecture.

As far as digital cables are concerned, save your money and buy a good one. Those core-sound ones are crap. The pins bend and are too large for the holes in the 7pin input. They'll damage the 7pin input on a dat deck. Get a cable with a sony 7pin head with the shield.
