So we got a new SARS that's way more contagious... and seems way less controlled. Approaching 80k infections (reported), kinda blowing my mind. This is actually going to be a pandemic, officially, most likely.

It's not going to wipe out the human race but it's gonna be a big deal.

it's way less deadly than SARS/MERS but when there's a shit ton more transmission, you get a lot more deaths.

older you are, more likely to die. no deaths of people under age 9 reported.

pre-existing conditions of course raise your risk

very contagious flu with 100-1000x+ more chance of death (probably about 1-2% but in elderly it's above 50%). compared to regular flu, which is something like 0.01%-0.1% depending on the year.

1-2% is a lot when you have hundreds of thousands of cases. it's great it's not ebola with 50% but it will kill a lot of people

there's no real sign it's under control which is the scary part

iran announced 2 people had it and then a few hours later that they died. meaning there's probably a cluster of people that haven't been announced yet, unlikely 2 random people got it without transmitting it to others.

this is the first disease thing like this i've legitimately been scared about. i'm not a doctor or anything obviously, but i never felt this way with SARS/MERS/Ebola/etc. and i don't think i'm an alarmist

there's also indications that 2-3 week incubation period isn't uncommon meaning the 14 day quarantines are not good enough which has been standard

if you haven't read about the cruise ship you should, it's insane. 20% of people tested have it. just had first two deaths reported

When I watch, say, my mom die from COVID, I'll tell her "Sorry Mom, I'm not capable of dealing with two very different problems at once, and I already have my hands full with the violent deaths of women"

I'll pass a homeless person about to die of hypothermia and, yup, have to explain why I can't help

That's almost exactly how society have dealt with minority issues for a long time.

Point being if we freaked out about many other issues with even higher mortality rates out there as we do about coronavirus, maybe we'd be a little better off.
