Yeah, I’ve always interpreted XYU as Billy either putting on a persona (or embracing his inner id), in an effort to show how losing your “one and only” can make someone behave in irrational and borderline psychotic ways. The lyrics are very misogynistic but don’t paint the protagonist in a positive light either. But I may be giving Bill too much credit; it’s possible that is literally how he viewed his ex at the time and given how he acts in real life, it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to think that he believes that a man who rants like he does in XYU is being completely rational and the hero of the story.

Anyway, I also can’t believe I forgot that 101 percent line and the lyrics to Gastro Pains. Probably the worst lyrics he’s ever written.

I think XYU is more about his relationships to his mother or step-mother. I've never thought XYU stood for ex-why-you, but rather X.Y.YOU...as in *you* being last.

It’s like, men face issues with sanity too! I don’t understand why writing lyrics that come from the darkest most hidden away parts of your soul are taboo.

Men think fucked up shit and have a lot of societal pressure, XYU reflects that, for better or worse even if the lyrics are unhinged and misogynistic

Holy shit. I love everything about this. xy = male, u = you, "you, male", that wouldn't make much sense unless the subject of the song is a transgender person. "ex, why you?" seems more plausible.

Maybe he is, but I'd base that on what he says in interviews and not treat his lyrics as if they're 100% honest Billy. It's be like saying that someone who makes horror movies for a living really wishes they could stab a bunch of people.

For some reason I kinda like that line. I at least think it’s better than the chorus of its Shitegeist cousin: “That’s the way my love is, that’s the way I care.”

I know that’s one of the more popular tracks off that album but no one will ever convince me he spent more than 10 minutes on those lyrics.
