I tried listening to Pearl Jam years ago but I really, seriously disliked Vedder's voice. I don't know why, but I couldn't get past it.
Also, I have never been a fan of Bob Dylan - and I have tried - because he was a great lyricist at times but I can't stand his voice. I mean I find it grating and abysmal. Am I a philistine? |

I can never understand people being so against the idea of wanting intelligence from the music you listen to

i dunno i think all of this 90s seattle crap is well past expiry date and needs to be buried. i'm tired of people acting like it was the last time anything mainstream was good, heartfelt, or real or whatever the fuck. love how people took exception to everclear which are definitely in that scene, and not with STP. just because you don't like the group doesn't mean they aren't still grunge
melvins started in 1983 so lumping them in with all of that shit is basically like saying Dinosaur Jr was a grunge band |

Everclear and STP both suck and none of that is Kurt Cobain's fault Nirvana doesn't need to be "retired" any more than the overhyped classic rock acts that they share the Rolling Stone Top Whatever lists with These are popular bands and they are from the last period in time when there really was a monoculture that fostered these "iconic" type acts. People are nostalgic for that feeling. These contemporary bands seem kinda flimsy in comparison |

The funny thing is, Grunge was never a real genre.
It was just a way to lump bands together that were from the same area, and make $$$. Mudhoney was the first band to break it open, and Soundgarden and AIC and Pearl Jam were all doing their thing, and then Nirvana just blew the roof off with Nevermind, and all of a sudden the record execs said, "Hey kids, check it out, it's the new sensation, it's called "GRUNGE"!!. Buy Records!! And somewhere, Billy Corgan was scratching his chin, thinking "hey, this just might work." Last edited by dreams of glass : 10-30-2014 at 01:41 AM. |

it wasn't directed at you, mostly just a rebuttal for my controversial, contrarian opinion
1) I'm glad iconic acts are dead 2) most grungetards do not even acknowledge that they are nostalgic for the monoculture and iconic bands. I think you're right, that's what they want. Fuzzy is our picture perfect grungetard and he's constantly worried about "hits" and "the radio" and pumpkins returning to "the mainstream" but the big issue i have is that these very same people think there was something real, honest, genuine about "alternative rock" from the 90s that is absent from any kind of percieved mainstream they were "fighting against." there's a definite spirit in "alternative rock" and/or "grunge" that it's somehow against the grain, non conformist, not mainstream. Even though Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are as mainstream as it gets, as well known as any dinosaur AOR acts. In fact, they basically have become dinosaur acts. I think that kind of dishonesty is what irritates me the most about 90s "alternative rock" fans. I think that's why i developed such a disdain for it, even though It was my thing when I was 17 (i loved almost all the bands that i currently disparage). Ultimately other people ruined it for me, constantly overpraising it, constantly acting like it was genuine, DIY, "alternative;" it's goddamn irritating. It's that kind of feeling that it's the last time music was any good, how many people who are our age just stop following any music after about 97. It's just I mean FUCK GRUNGE FUCK IT IN THE EAR FUCK IT IN THE OTHER EAR Last edited by Trotskilicious : 10-30-2014 at 01:43 AM. |

> i still find it perplexing that someone can say with a straight face that soundgarden and pearl jam aren't in a specific genre together

Seriously? I'm a huge SP fan, but their are a shitload of bands who could take the crown of "best 90's band" as if anyone gives a fuck. |
