I have this copy, I'm looking at it right now. Good interview with the band, though D'Arcy gets (and accepts) lots of praise for her bass playing on the album. Typical Billy quotes: "I used to live in this vague ambiguity...." "For years I wanted to be a girl..." "In a very metaphysical way [making music] is my job, it's my talent..."

I bought SD on the 21st July 1993, which is strange, as the official release date is July 27th. I remember just seeing it in HMV, no posters or big displays. Just a few copies sitting in the Smashing Pumpkins CD section.

Anyone else got any other stories or paraphernalia from that summer to share?

OK. The writer is referencing the androgynous sound of the group, at a time when androgyny in bands was on the rise (Suede were hitting big at that time in the UK). The writer states that the Pumpkins androgynous nature has never been contrived as some others'.

Billy:

Quote:
Actually, for years I wanted to be a girl. Heh! Heh! Heh! I did! It's the honest truth! I walked around for years wishing I was a girl. Not in a sexual way. But everything about men just turned me off. I just associated it with being dumb and stupid and insensitive. I just didn't want to be a man.

My whole life I've been told "you're so emotional, you're so moody". For years, I've tried to stuff down my feelings as if somehow I was doing something that wasn't right. And I associated, especially in American culture, being that way with being female.

I was going to post that Billy Corgan is a Woman conspiracy video,
http://forums.netphoria.org/showthread.php?t=184282
Only to find out it has been deleted. Don't worry, I downloaded it and will reupload to youtube in due season. The bastards can't hide the truth from the public any more.

They liked it just fine. Melody Maker didn't give albums marks out of 10, they just reviewed them. The reviewer liked the fact that it didn't contain an obvious hit single, thought Lemon was great, and overall admired the balls that U2 had to put such an album out.

Don't have it to hand now, but it was something like the sensitivity of the music comes from the bass, and D'arcy says "Thank you! I try".

You can hear the bass great in most pumpkins songs if your system isn't peasant level.

Yes, I always thought the bass was pretty present in SD. You can certainly hear it in the likes of the verses of Hummer and when it comes in in Today. Also pretty strong in Spaceboy, Soma too. Definitely in the quieter songs. It just occupies a space once the distortion kicks in.

Just by counting:

1 bass +

"I think Soma and Hummer had closer to 40 guitar tracks. Not all playing at the same time, but there could be 8-10 overdubs in one section, then another 8-10 in a second section, etc. A lot of times we would bounce them down...like in the ebow part, I think that was around 12 tracks mixed down to stereo." Butch Vig

The quote about Young Williams thinking on being a man. Is why the teenage me 'got' this band.

There's only one track of drums on the songs too but that doesn't mean you can't hear them - the main reason for this I guess is because the bass is just doubling the root note of the guitars more often than not. It's why it stands out on the clean parts so much, since the rhythm differs there a bit & it kind of stands on its own two legs a bit more

All of those guitar tracks are occupying the same space that one or two guitars usually would. They’re not 40 or whatever distinct guitars it’s just a technique to get smooth sounding fuzz.

If you really can’t hear the bass then get your ears checked/listen to something like And justice for all that really doesn’t have much audible bass/upgrade your shit tier system

Plenty of bass on SD.

Anyway back on topic. What else happened 25 years ago? That Raymond Revue bar gig can't be far off. That's a great bootleg.

I heard there is slightly more bass on the 2011 remaster of "Siamese Dream", because Bob Ludwig uses only DC-coupled audio equipment in the signal path...
