I've only seen them once, a couple of years ago, but they were really good live.

They have this thing every year called Afentra's Prom, named after a local radio DJ, where some bands will play and everyone dresses up like, well, a prom. I guess we're gonna go this year.

It's tonight and it's a handful of bands who I just don't even know who they are: Vance Joy, The Kooks, Joywave, and Heembree(?). I'm really losing touch.

It was either this or go to Shark Bar as a group and drink overpriced beer for three hours while yelling at each other.

so i ended up seeing

the inverted (local highschool band, maybe early college) - they were good performers, songs were ok

John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band - fair performance, uninterested in the songs

Eddie Money - canned jokes, shitty vocals, old songs sounded bad.

Damien Marley - great. really had the crowd united. everyone smoking weed and jumping up and down. great performance. he had a person who just waved the jamaican flag the whole time.

Elliot Root - who? pretty good, at one point he did a cover of the willy wonka 'pure imagination' song which was really good. i'd give him a B

Letts - lol terrible. who had this guy go before the headliner? boring songs with cliche lyrics, crowd hated it, band knew it and got off the stage asap

Hozier - really really good. he said it was his first time headlining. he did great. hozier seems like an intimate band so i was wondering about seeing him with 50,000 people but damn he did great. really surreal moment with the whole crowd singing the amens in take me to church. but i am familiar with his album and he did really well. his voice is amazing. great band behind him. totally will see them again

Jenny Lewis was phenomenal.

T has always been lukewarm about her but he came with me and also loved it. Woo.

That's funny, speaking of J. Lewis, there's a band from Lawrence called La Guerre and they opened last night and I thought the lead singer sounded like J Lewis in some songs : https://katlynconroy.bandcamp.com. (I haven't heard the studio tracks yet but live she came across similar.)

Anyway, the band Has A Shadow played after them - darkwave/psych/shoegaze from Mexico and it was beautiful. I love them and was super fucking ecstatic about them being added to the bill.

After they played I was an old person and left because it was 11:30 and I had to work today. Missed L.A. Witch, with whom I am not familiar.

Purity Ring was beautiful - very witch∆house, set off the fire alarm due to smoke

Bone Thugs was a disappointment - their flow was fine but 1) they did abbreviated versions of their songs and 2) bizzy bone was not there, contrary to all advertising saying otherwise. People were visibly irritated that they didn't take the stage until midnight and then small chunks of people were leaving once they realized bizzy wasn't there.

Only show for the rest of the month is Surfer Blood on the 27th at a venue where I already saw them play last year. It'd basically be free but I'm on the fence about it. Think I'd rather stay home and sleep because I'm old.

Weekday shows are so hard. Only do it if I really love the act now.

i didn't know they still existed. i stopped listening to them after their follow-up to source tags & codes was terrible. did they bounce back after that?

Yeah man I feel that. Less shows in general this year and probably less as time goes on. This year I limited myself to bands I hadn't seen before (unless it's one of my top five bands or something) and it's worked well.

Saw Lisa Loeb last night. Belle & Sebastian is Wednesday at Radio City Music Hall, that'll be weird.

Tomorrow I'll fly to Edinburgh, see a bunch of Fringe Festival and Book Festival events, and then on Sunday I'll see Sufjan.

On Monday, I'll take the train to Manchester to see Sufjan again.

Then twice more in London.

Then Brighton.

Then Bristol.
It's going to be amazing.

Joy Formidable is coming to Atlanta which is close enough for me to try to go. I'm hoping Dinosaur Jr tours again soon, I still haven't seen them and I've become pretty obsessed
