Prefer the 2011 remaster if I'm honest.

I did some listening last night to all three versions. My DAC is a Chord Mojo which can decode the hi-res 2011 remaster.
First I compared I Am One from the 1991 and 1994 versions. I listened to each several times, and what struck me was I could identify the 1994 version every time, partly because it's the version I grew up with and played so often in the 90s. The snare has more weight behind it and there's just that bit more weight and impact, very noticeable in the intro. After this I played the 2011 remaster. It sounds a bit louder at the same volume level - because it's a bit more compressed. Some details are more obvious too - could be due to that bit more compression, or some EQ changes, or the higher bitrate and sampling rate. But I felt the music had less dynamic impact. the drums didn't sound quite as natural as on the other two versions. |

The 2011 version sounds fine to my ears and is the version I default to nowadays, but I can't say I've ever noticed as much difference as I do with SD or MCIS, where respectively I prefer the original and remaster. |

Somewhat embarrassingly I have discovered I actually got the 1991 and 1994 mixed up last night, which means I preferred the 1991. I need to have another listen but the 1994 sounds a bit muddier. I'm starting to think none of them are perfect, and the 2011 remaster was a missed opportunity. They should have got Steve Hoffman to remaster it.

so the point of getting the hi-res was to have a more compressed version?

Good Gosh!
Realised an opportunity to get a High Resolution download of Gish on "Acoustic Sounds". But it's only a 24bit FLAC with 44kHz sampling frequency. Wasn't there a 96kHz version...? And there could be local destrictions according the distribution. http://store.acousticsounds.com/d/11...24bit_Download https://scontent-frt3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...f9&oe=5C3F8DFD |

It's a fucking travesty imo that the hi-res remaster is so squashed, as it could have been excellent. The original mastering was DR13 - imagine how that would have sounded mastered properly in hi-res. |

Probably a 16bit 44.1KHz version of the 2011 remaster. This one:

I went through the ordering process when they couldn't directly tell me the shipping costs to Germany. Got an email over a week later about it. In the meantime I had bought it at an Ebay-dealer from the Netherlands... |
