I think I have a copy of Sequence IV without the DNR or EQ'ing. I'll have to hunt it down when I get off work.

I purchased the original Gish Rough Mix cassette from Mike Po. It was transferred to DAT then SHNs with the help of Fares Halteh. We then circulated it.
I purchased the original '85 - '87 Marked cassette from Ron Roesing. Fares assisted with the transfer. This is the copy in circulation. I don't recall if we circulated the Joliet Tape and Attic Rehearsal. Ron Roesing might have sent me these CD-Rs as well, but I don't know if he did the transfers or received them from someone else. I think he likely received them from someone else. Mike Po also sent me The Reel Time Sessions (both electric & acoustic) on two CD-Rs. He told me the recordings were transferred directly from his master copy (I think he had DATs). Anyway, this is the copy in circulation. We also circulated a version of Machina Acoustic Demos. The story goes that the niece of a hockey player (Billy's friend) sent an analogue copy to someone. That was circulated. Fares then cleaned up that version and circulated again. Eventually, someone obtained a digital copy from the hockey player's original CD. I have a copy. I assume this was circulated as well. This is to the best of my recollection at the moment! |

Hey, Dade,
I've been visiting the satur9hub several times this week but it was always down - is it dead or is it coming back or did it move ...? Thanks and regards! |

Does the version of Sequence IV without noise reduction still exist?
The only time I ever heard it was via incredibly lossy files (sourced from RealAudio IIRC) on Jeroen's NSPAA (RIP) around 2000/2001. I distinctly recall the super loud tape hiss. Since then the only source I've been able to track down is the version that's linked above. Anyone remember this or am I crazy? |

Thinking about it, there was technically a pure recording of the running order of at least some of Mike's DAT. When Josh Provost and I went to Mike's house, he showed us the DAT, which had the tracklisting on it. We asked him to play it but he said no. We were there for a few hours, so later on, we begged him again to play it and he finally relented. I remember some time between the first request and the second, Josh and I hatched a plan to field record whatever he would play for us. Josh had brought a recorder since we were ostensibly there to "interview" Mike, be he didn't want to be on the record. My recollection was that Josh turned the recorder on and left it on the table, or maybe he had it in his back pocket when Mike played the DAT. I think we were mainly trying to get one song on tape... I don't remember which song it was, but there was an unknown (to us) song on the tracklist. I vaguely remember it began with a 'B', but when he played the song, it turned out to be an alternate title for a known track. Josh went home with the recording, and he never made a copy for me. It was probably unlistenable, but it would have preserved at least a portion of the true running order. |

A few years after the noise reduction version circulated, Onica contacted me to ask me if I could make her a copy of the cassette. I guess the story was Onica sent the tape to John (I think that was his name), who did the noise reduction. He was supposed to send her a copy of it once he cleaned it up, but never got around to it. Onica sent the tape to me, I spun it off to DAT, made her a CDR and sent it all back. I still have the DAT somewhere. I remember trying to work with it, but it was just a hot mess. My recollection is the hissing sounded unnatural, something deliberately introduced to make the recording very hard to listen to. |

Here is what I have burnt on audio CD's.
""" The Smashing Pumpkins 1995/05/31 - Chicago Recording Company; Chicago, IL, USA STU/ANA ANA > DAT > CDR 62 min "Sequence IV" 1. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness 2. Tonight, Tonight 3. Jellybelly 4. Zero 5. Here Is No Why 6. Bullet with Butterfly Wings 7. To Forgive 8. Fuck You 9. Love 10. Cupid de Locke 11. Galapogos 12. Muzzle 13. Porcelina of the Vast Oceans 14. Lily 15. Take Me Down Notes : On this date, a rough mix of the Mellon Collie album was created, dubbed Sequence Four. In other words, this tape was basically what Mellon Collie sounded like as of May 31st. All songs were rough takes and featured scratch vocals, if any; Galapogos even featured a solo that was omitted from the final version. Created on 5/31/00 at the Chicago Recording Company. Unsure of as to how long the studio session was that produced these. Known Errors : 12 - Muzzle has a cut around 1:04 'and I Circulating Copies do not have this cut) 13 - Original Porcelina of the Vast Oceans has multipule pops. These occur at: 5:00, 5:02, 5:03, 5:14, 5:22, 6:13, 6:15, 6:24, 7:07, 7:52, 8:12, and 8:26. These pops have since been removed. For some reason the songs drop out at around 6khz, all copies that I know of do this. I'm still unsure if it is totally normal for Sequence IV though so I'm still trying to find an answer from someone who knows more about these demos. """ Is this the "enhanced" version? I also have among all versions of Gish stuff, the Previeu I thing. Is this completely redundant with what is here? |

I think I do have the complete Previeu I set.
I'll try to rip it together with Sequence IV once I locate a CD reader I can connect to my computer. Note that this will add an extra "CD-R" generation as in this ancient time I used to burn music on CD's and listen to them using a CD player... Hopefully it will only mean losing very few audio samples at the beginning and the end of the CD's unless they have already rotten in 10 years. |

Billy Corgan handwritten demo tape LOOK! Description: Guarantee you that NOBODY has ever seen one of these - what this is, is a cassette of rough mixes of "Gish," made while mixing the album, that was given to me by Billy Corgan. These are taken from an off-the-console mix at Smart Studios. The mixes are *slightly* different, but pretty much the finished version. Also, funnily enough, Billy used this tape to record OVER the demos for the band "Catherine," who he was helping to get signed at the time... Best of all, of course, the songs titles are are in Billy's handwriting. You can verify the authenticity of this piece, as well as who in the heck I am, at my webpage: http://www.mikepo.com. Feel free to ask any questions, as well. This is one-of-a-kind. Difficult to price an item like this. A reserve price has been set, but I'll likely be willing to deal even if the reserve isn't met... Winning bidder to prepay, including actual shipping costs. - Mike Potential I also found a further description sent to me before I purchased it: That writing up on the top left is Jerome Brown from Catherine's handwriting, and those are the song titles that were originally the demo on this tape. This is the catherine demo that billy was supposed to give me, but he taped over the entire catherine part with his "gish" tracks. There's actually a part on here that I blurred out, on the photo - it was somebody's phone number, and even though nobody lives there anymore, you know... no point putting a picture of some hapless dude's phone number up on ebay, for obsessive pumpkins fans to try calling, anyways... The difference with the mixes - for one thing, this is before any sort of "mastering." Most of the mixes are final, but aren't necessarily the same as they would sound on the cd - just some eq differences, and instrument mixes. These are, like, how to explain - these are the final takes and tracks that were used, but in some instances, the levels weren't quite right yet - some guitars are slightly louder, or lower - and, frankly, the audio quality isn't necessarily the greatest, to begin with... Billy rushed a bunch of copies of this off to friends, and it certainly *sounds* rushed... So, there's no real instance I can point to, where the tracks are entirely different, but I do think that a diehard fanatic would listen and say, "hey, this mix seems different." - The point being, this is probably cooler for the packaging and just the historical value, more than for the recordings themselves. It's just, you know, a weird little chunk of rock history. And, yes, from '90. From about a month or maybe two before Gish came out - like, was that, fall? You probably know better than I do. Getting old, you know... Thanks for asking! -Mike Po |
