Anhhh they were originally pretty funny and quirky, big budget videos, lot's of promotion. Pretty inoffensive as far as suburban white-guy rap goes.

You should have made this thread about Eminem. Goddamn has he aged poorly. Purple Pills is rad though, but that was D-12.

Eminem's songs, at least some of them, are well written though. Like I don't know much Beastie Boys but basically only Intergalactic strikes me as an actual good song. I'll stir fry you in my wok, bitch

If you're dissing 'em for being popular, then you should give the album the mainstream overlooked Check Your Head a chance before you make a final judgment. It was their 3rd album and the first where they played instruments instead of using samples. Critically acclaimed and trendsetting for the alt-movement (even Greg Kot loved it) this album is the 90's standard from them for me.

It's sorta hard to properly get a measure of it now because their influence is so large that most of what they inspired has been codified as tropes, but a lot of their production/arrangement style was really influential in the larger spheres of hip-hop, specifically on Paul's Boutique.

Licensed to Ill really stood out at the time. Yes, eventually in image, but at first it was the sound. It was stripped down a lot compared to the chorus drench that dominated virtually all genre's of popular music through the 80's. Thinking about it now, it shouldn't be understated the unique timing of its release in a time where the lofi sound itself was part of its appeal.

It's easy to understand how it happened. The major label noticed that rap was exploding in the underground so they got an accessible white-guy version to milk it. It was Elvis Presley all over again!

kinda ya...they simply became the party band. Jr. High, High School, College and Corporate parties --it didn't matter, Licensed to Ill was being played.

I can understand hating Licensed to Ill (which is where Paul Revere came from), but really, the frat-rap-rock sound is not terribly representative of who they grew into.

I would give Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication and their last album, The Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 a sampling before you write them off completely.

It's too early yet.

Don't fret fuzzy, some folks can actually evolve and change their viewpoints.
