Thumbs up Machina has aged so well...

...if you compare it to the last 10 years of "Pumpkins" music.

Eh, I suppose. To me, it felt dated the day it was released, so there was nowhere to really go but up.

I mean, the songs are (mostly) good, but the record as a whole just sounded re-heated.

the song writing during that era was actually pretty good. I was pretty excited for it after the Arising Tour. Production/version choices just didn't pan out.

SIYL and and GATGC are money though.

Yeah, the production is shit. Sounds so fucking muddy. I still dig most of the songs, though.

I've always liked the production on machina: hazy, buzzy, ephemereal, psychedelic, one of a kind. The arrangements are occasionally too busy for the songs' own goods, is all

Billy's stubbornness about not recording a live album may have hurt him here. In retrospect, it would of been a brilliant move to cherry pick the best of the Arising shows and roll out the new songs that way. An MII came out anyway, so he could of told the story there, but...oh well.

The demos are amazing but Bobo don't want yall to hear them. At one point before he fucked it all up it was the best album he has ever done.

What tracklist would you say represents the ideal post-Adore album?

Well, upon further review, as much as the live version of Speed Kills rocked, the studio version is par excellence, even exceeding the live interpretation.

On the flip side, there's Blue Skies Brings Tears.

If those leaked demos could replace garbage like BSBT and Mercury, and the production was less shitty nu-metal-y, and Corgan had the opportunity to make the theme/story more cohesive, Machina would be up there with MCIS/SD

"Machina" and "aged well" should never go together in a sentence.

I think it's a better album than Adore, but it was clear at that point that the original magic of the band was a thing of the past.

If I had to pick one pumpkin album on a top 5 desert island album list, it would be machina. Unless it had to be vinyl. Machina doesn't translate well to vinyl for me. I never bought MCIS or SD on vinyl but I have the Siamese singles and 1979 on vinyl and they translate much better. I think all the ethereal sounds, the fuzziness that just sounds amazing on machina when you hold a nice pair of headphones to your ears are diminished on vinyl. It's almost like he made a record that sounded like a vinyl record, and then pressed it to vinyl where it sounded not as good.

I think I have exceeded the maximum usage of the word vinyl for one post.

Speed Kills has aged so well. Both versions. The rawk and the spacey. One of my fav pumpkins tunes. "The last rose of summer is gone--looooong gone! Yes!

I haven't listened to MI and MII as seperate albums since sln put up his playlist/compilation.

I'd say some songs like TEG do have a definite late 90's feel but overall I agree with the sentiment. Some of SP's best stuff came from this period.
