Default What SP song means the most to you emotionally?

For me, Today is the most emotional song. It got me through a lot of hard times when I was dealing with suicidal thoughts, and I really empathize with Billy's lyrics in that song. The melody, haunting vocals and guitar work on that song make it so I get a lot out of it emotionally both when I am upset and when I am feeling happy. However, I don't think SP necessarily capture the full emotion of that song when they play it live the way they do for some of the other super emotional songs. I think the guitar tones aren't as effective live without all the "studio magic", and Billy and the band often play it quicker and more aggressively live. I realize many people don't get the same things I get out of Today, and kind of feel it is too "poppy", but again, this is just my personal experience with the song. Some other songs I feel are worthy of being argued for the most emotional SP song: For Martha, Beautiful, Crestfallen, To Forgive, Here is No Why, Disarm, Soma, Mayonaise and Thru the Eyes of Ruby.

In the Arms of Sleep

It puts me in such a vulnerable state. And oh, this weepingg guitar (I assume it's James)

"And I'll always need her more than she could ever need me
I need someone to ease my mind
But sometimes a someone is so hard to find"

I am married, and this still hits me, though it changed its meaning. it used to be about fiinding the right person. Now it's the realization that even the right person can't fix you.

That reminds me I need to listen to the demos from MCIS still. It' crazy to think I've heard like 300 SP songs and still have many to go.

Child abuse is one of the evilest things anyone can do. If you went through that, I am truly sorry and am glad you are still here and kicking ass.

That's a great lyric, and I like your interpretation of it. Do you think James was thinking about D'Arcy when he wrote that? It fits.

Of course Billy wrote it, but I think it's James who plays a guitar part I think is great.

To me it feels that way, about dissociating out of your body (or away from physical sensation) while experiencing physical pain. Although he uses the term "in my body" I think it's describing the same thing;

Hold silent
You were my violence stuck
In my life
Just for the moment
And let me under you
So you can die

I see it like "I hold still/silent" during violence (which is all you can do as a kid). Let me retreat into myself/under you (whatever) as an escape from what you're doing (mentally/emotionally/internally) so you/this situation can stop existing

In my body
You'll never find me
You'll never pull me out
In my body
The lonely creatures
The lonely creatures scream

The only way to escape long lasting physical torment is to dissociate/go away, the greatest extent is to actually make yourself forget it after it happens, but there's still a vague sense (imo) of hiding inside some part of yourself that is very primitive and untouchable by anyone else, and it's been my experience of even feeling like that space consist of you becoming an entirely different type of thing, that can't feel pain - those two combine, the primitive feeling/multiple parts of consciousness feeling, "lonely creatures". (and ime this part of yourself or whatever can be seen as some kind of eternally screaming/in pain primitive reflexive thing that you've separated from the rest of yourself doesn't really go away unless you somehow assimilate what you/it went through)

could be totally wrong

according to her the vast majority of songs are about her lol

but in reality i wouldn't be surprised if fuck you is

XYU seems different to me but who knows. i don't really know why. XYU makes me think of a really fucked up relationship and while I think he had his shit with Courtney was not pretty, this seems different, maybe ode to no one seems to be trying to escape a controlling relationship and XYU is being the controller with the other person the escapee

man you had two huge narcissist who were insanely successful, cobain seemed like an OK chap but he also didn't have enough time to let his asshole colors show quite like the other two so who knows there... but god they must have played some fucked up mind games with each other and had some crazy wild sex

And nobody knows you
Even if they pretend to
They all sure that they're just as clever
Truth is rare as ivory
The truth is in their pure deceit
Blessed in your naivete

Anytime any artist sings about Love, Courtney thinks they're singing about her...
"love is suicide"
"love, it's all you know"
"Do you feel Love is real?"
"Consume my love, devour my hate "
"killer in you is the killer in me, my love"
"she really loves to break"
"i'm in love with you"
"out of love and out of feeling"
.....
....

....

the list is endless.

Luna, By Starlight, Raindrops + Sunshowers.
Also have a pretty emotional connection to where boys fear to tread, not because of the lyrics or anything but because it kicks major ass.

Too many to count, but notably:

The End Is The Beginning Is The End - 1997 and headbanging in my dad's car, singing along every time it came on the radio. I'll forever associate that song with all the times we'd drive around. Miss him terribly.

To Sheila - Not out of any particular emotional attachment to lyrics. It's just a beautiful song that got me from listen one and still does.

All of Machina I in general. Winter 2000 and being in love. Album on repeat. Constant trips over to her place, intimacy.

Blissed And Gone - I have a very vivid memory of walking home from a friend's place listening to Judas O on my discman, middle of January in the cold, snow coming down. This was in the year break I took between high school and college, and I'd just found out said friend was moving off to Toronto, and I'd come off my first real relationship (aforementioned) and it had ended badly:

I had no voice
I had no drive
I had no choice
I've done my time
I had myself
Had my band
I had my love
Had no hand in watching it all fall apart

And I'm thinking to myself Jesus fuck, high school is over, innocence is over, my life is about to change forever

And if you're still feeling down
Then maybe you need me around
To lift and scold you
To send you crashing all right now
Maybe you need me around

And that moment right there, hearing that, was when despite being more into NIN and Manson and any number of industrial acts, I really had my moment of fucking hell this band I've been enjoying so much for years now is really fucking gone isn't it, fuck I'm going to miss them so much oh no
