MACHINA Appreciation
When I first started listening to the Pumpkins, everyone would tell me that the two ultimate albums were Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie. That was years ago. Today MCIS remains my favorite pumpkins album, as well as my favorite of all time. But I think that MACHINA is nearly as good as SD. Definately SP's 3rd greatest album, at the very least. Of course, it took me forgetting and dismissing the whole "Glass and the Machines of God" concept to truly appreciate how awesome the songs on MACHINA are.
I dunno, maybe I'm alone in this opinion. But I believe that MACHINA is a very misunderstood and brilliant album that always seems to get mistreated by the fans. And judging by the responses to this thread, I guess I'll find out. BTW, does anybody know the technical term for what Billy wore throughout the MACHINA tour? The whole black dress-thing that wasn't really a dress. For the longest time I thought it was called a Gaultier... until I found out there is no such thing. |

i've heard them call it alchemists robes, but i'm not sure how true that is.
i really like machina, but i'm a fan that's easy to please as pumpkin fans go. i don't think it's so solid of an album, but it's got some brilliant moments: stand inside your love, i of the mourning, this time, with every light, try try try... yes, i even like try try try. i'm not ashamed! |

Yes. I got a decent pair of speakers and a new amp last week and it sure as heck sounds a lot better now. Incredibly lush.
I don't really like the drug theme, but it is a very powerful visual if you listen to the lyrics. The track order of the vinyl is superior to the CD version, too. |

No SP's third greatest is something from the Early 1989 Demos.

I love GATGC, and I Of the Mourning, and Try, Try, Try, and Raindrops. You can all stone me for saying that. A lot of people cite the irrelevant MACHINA mystery and Billy's penchant for so-called "dresses" as the reason they stopped caring about the Pumpkins in the late 90s. Of course if Bowie does something similar he immediately gets praised for it. I don't see how "Spiders From Mars" is any different than "GATMOG", but people treat those two concepts like polar opposites.

the whole GATMOG thing was really dumb. especially those fucking cartoons. holy shit.

Machina is really underrated on this board and in general.
The entire album has this really strange feel to it that really sounds like nothing else. It's definitely not as good as SD or MCIS but it's 10x better then Zeitgeist. |

I disagree. I think Zeitgeist is far better than Machina.

machina is a good album overall. it could have been a lot better, but it contains some outstanding songs. all the mystery stuff, gatmog is irrelevant. the band's look did nothing for me either but again, this is superficial.

I agree. While Machina has a few songs that own everything on Zeitgeist, as a whole, Zeitgeist is alot better than MAchina. |

I was running today and was listening to Everlasting Gaze and Raindrops & Sunshowers. I like those songs. Then I put it to Wound and had to turn it off. That voice. Argh.
