John Cale: Better than Lou?
I've been a slight fan of John's for a while, but only now am I truely appricating his incredible songwriting ability. I'm preticularly enamored with his live acoustic album Fragments Of A Rainy Season. I'm a big fan of Lou and everything, but I think I'm going to have to give it to Mr. Cale as a better songwriter. If you're not aquainted with his stuff outside the VU, you should be. I'm not sure what to recomend, seeing that I only own 3 of his albums and haven't gotten around to listening to one of them yet (I can't put down FOARS). If you were to download something off of that, I would suggest Dying On The Vine, Buffalo Ballet, or Fear. I need to get the Island years box set. He work with all the guys from the art scene at the time (Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, Richard Thompson, Chris Spedding, etc.).

He was definitely more consistent than Reed in that he kept making good albums post-VU. But as much as I love some of his solo stuff, Paris 1919 especially, there's no way Cage's peaks hit Reed's peaks. It's intriguing to think that if Lou had let him do some more of the songwriting, Cage/Reed could have been like Lennon/McCartney instead of always being mentioned separately.
And while we're talking about VU: what the fuck is up with "Heroin" in car commercials? |
