you don't really get it, but suffice to say that you don't notice when men write songs about men or from an exclusively male perspective because it's "normal" to you and when women write songs about other women you think it's a "gimmick"

Except that that's not at all what I'm saying, women writing songs from the perspective of being a woman isn't at all gimmicky, turning gender into a rallying cry and basing your image and output almost solely on being women, instead of personal experiences or deeper thought, is pretty much the definition of having a gimmick.

What makes this band better than a band like Editors? I mean I don't understand that Editors get no love on this board but Savages do. Savages aren't the saviors of post punk. They are at times just as derivative as Editors were.

But I'm not pointing to feminism or being a woman expressing yourself as a gimmick, I've made that clear from the very start. I'm pointing to a sloganistic, simplified image that focuses purely on one aspect and just happens to be in the guise of feminism in this case - but would apply equally to any band with an image focused on a political or social movement.

If I started a band of organic gardeners called the no-tills and put pictures of organic produce on all our merch while going around repeating some slogan like "save the scene grow it green" it would be a gimmick just like Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, and L7's images are a gimmick-because putting feminist slogans on everything and focusing almost solely on feminism when it comes to the image they put forth is just advertising that narrowly defines them in the public eye in an attempt to stand out to possible fans.

Just like Gangster Rap, straight-edge, or Nazi punk bands are gimmicks, being a feminist band is a gimmick, not because they're feminist but because they define themselves ONLY as such.

The Savages album is growing on me. The vocalist is quite amazing at times. And the bassist really stands out too. It's not quite Interpol level of amazing but it is above average.
