I have taken part in some message boards that talk about general music and awards like the RnR HOF. It was funny because no one mentioned the Pumpkins not being nominated until I brought them up. Then there were like 5 people that were all like "oh yeah, forgot about them, great band!"

So it's like an out of sight out of mind sort of thing. But not completely forgotten. Unfortunately though, those peoples kids won't know who they are.

Looks like Clayton should better spend his little money for a new shaver.

It's such a stupid name for a group so I'm not joining. They should have called it something cool like Cherubs Rock. They're basically admitting that they're a bunch of saddos. I like to live in denial about my current station in life.

SP 1991-1996 is one of the best runs of any rock band in history. I really believe that. They officially released 100-200 songs in that extremely short period of time (by comparison the Beatles released about 200 in 7 years compared to SP’s 5 years) and the quality, consistency, and breadth of the material is pretty high.

What I think I’ve figured out though is that even though Billy “wrote all the songs and played all the instruments,” the people surrounding him were absolutely crucial. Without brilliant co-conspirators like Butch, Alan Moulder, Flood, D’Arcy, and James.....Billy is fucking useless as a songwriter, producer, and performer. Period. The past 20 years are proof.

One of the things I’ve learned as a professional musician is that the bassist, producer, drummer, engineer...all these people are hugely responsible for the final product even if they don’t get credit or play a single
note on the final mix. Martin Hannett creating the Joy Division sound is another great example of this.

Billy thought it was all him and has learned the hard way that coming into the practice room with a skeleton of a song is only the beginning. He can’t finish the job himself and 90% of people can’t.

Billy was pretty clearly not "fucking useless" as any of those things, regardless of the stellar collaborators he did have around him. Also, the past 20 years at best prove that Billy is only sucking as a songwriter/whatever else now considering he's had Jimmy, James, and a host of other worthy collaborators but still could only come out with fuckin' Shiny volume 1

i know we all love to hate Bill these days but when y'all start infringing on the past work like that it just looks stupid

SP will bear like a paragraph in the future recountings of 90's alt-rock, same as Pearl Jam, who have also released a bunch of inoffensive and forgettable stuff since their heyday.

Well, I think 90's alt-rock/grunge in it's own right will be relegated to kind of a footnote. Nirvana will be the main remembered group. SP will just sorta be lumped in with a mention with groups like Soundgarden and AIC.

If you look at SP's reign of cultural relevance, it was a very small amount of time. Siamese Dream was kind of a slow burn that kept on getting hotter and hotter and then led up to Melon Collie which was their cultural zenith and then by 97/98 everyone was getting sick of or had already had enough of Billy Corgan and his shtick.

I'm reading Moby's new book right now, and the same thing happened to him. There's actually a lot of correlations in their rise and fall from grace. He was the golden child for a short time and then after a few years everyone started getting sick and tired of him in a big way. Moby talks a lot in the book about losing the plot and desperately wanting to be famous again by just cranking out what he thought would be hits and when those failed he got more and more frustrated. Reminded me a lot about Billy Corgan.

Moby recently lost the plot over Natalie Portman. He's now a funny meme.

To be fair, the book doesn't exactly paint much of a hot and heavy romance between the 2, it more just expresses the anxiety he had when she apparently showed interest in him and when they started going out.

The books quite entertaining, but the chapters are intertwined with chapters about his childhood and I sorta just skipped the childhood chapters because it's a big book and it's due back to the library in only 2 weeks and I had it just sitting around for awhile before I dove in.

I never realized before that Moby was a raging alcoholic drug abuser. Quite a thrilling read to learn about his insane debauchery. I read it for 8 hours straight one night/early morning
