Probably this already existed but like i'm gonna go dig......

Me, french band called Indochine and a record called 7000 danses from 1987. I was 9. Very famous in the french world since their debut in 1981, arguably the most popular french band ever in fact (maybe you know them, maybe you dont, no idea how well recognized is the name outside of the french world), but have sucked for like 20 years, like really sucked (despite being still extremely popular though they had a huge slump in terms of popularity for about ten years in the 90's). They started new wave, very synthpop at first, sounded a little more organic after a while. They sounded kinda like...well here's a video of a single off that record, probably still my favorite song of theirs (it doesn't really kick in until about 40 secs in, the intro is not indicative):

Indochine La Machine à Rattraper le Temps (1987) by indochineofficial

I still like all their 80's stuff. In the 90s they tried a britpop sound. In the 2000's...well fuck knows what sound that is but they basically owe their later life popularity to taking on emo aesthetics more or less (image wise). suddenly, french teenagers liked them (again), despite the fact that half the band was over 40 (every original member but the singer is gone). Total midlife crisis bullshit.

Despite their later suckiness It would have been a decent start on my musical journey if it wasn't that the SECOND record i ever bought was....Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth....obviously i still had a long way to go.

I just remembered Melissa Auf Der Maur actually did a song with them in the early 2000's.... so did Brian Molko. Gainsbourg directed one of their 80's video but while i like the song, the video kinda blows (then again it was the 80's)

(The first records I got were audio books/stories/radio plays.) First music LPs were Christmas presents, '87.

- Leonard Bernstein
- Whitney Houston

My family told me what the lyrics were about, but I didn't care much. All I wanted was to DANCE.

A Velvet Underground compilation LP, featuring songs from their first two albums. It had most of my faves.

in this thread does "record" mean a vinyl LP or just an album?

Oh vinyl I don't remember. Probably something equally bopperish but for teens, I'm thinking The Strokes - Room on Fire

My parents got me Five's first album on cassette, then their second album Invincible on CD for Christmas the year it came out. Those were the only two albums I had for a while, then I unceremoniously threw them out, wanting to distance myself from them in a same way that a child might grow out of their old baby toys.

I didn't religiously listen to music for a while until I was 14, when I bought Green Day - American Idiot and Good Charlotte - The Chronicles of Life and Death

The cycle repeated itself with all the pop punk bands I used to like.

Running With Scissors was one of my first CDs, although I think my sister paid 12 dollars and I put in 1 dollar cause that's all I had.

actually I think the very first album I bought was either Fastball or Savage Garden

Savage Garden had a good number of successful hits for just having two albums
