Default Two fans of the particular brand of indie rock that SXSW provides are dead.

Literally the worst after-tragedy article in the history of life.

Pressing Pause: Lindsay Zoladz on Last Night's SXSW Tragedy and its Aftermath

By Lindsay Zoladz, March 13, 2014 at 10:39 a.m.

Even at a music festival, there are moments when music takes a back seat. Before 1 a.m. last night, my primary concern had been inching towards the front of the crowd at the NPR Showcase at Stubb's, so I could snag a good spot for Damon Albarn's headlining solo set. Eventually, success: During his soundcheck, I'd made it up close enough to the stage that the only other people around me were fellow Blur nerds sharing their credentials. We debated Parklife vs. 13; someone made a reference to a specific section of Alex James's memoir and a couple of people laughed knowingly. That kind of thing.
And then my phone started buzzing with a constant stream of texts from people asking if I was OK. In situations like that—the moment before you realize exactly what you are suddenly very grateful to be "OK" from—you fear the worst, and in this case something resembling the worst turned out to be true. Minutes before, a drunk driver had plowed through a crowd of people across the street from where I was then standing. As I scrolled through Twitter, more details emerged: At least two people dead, as many as 23 injured. Stunned and disoriented, I did something that minutes before would have seemed unfathomable: I gave up a front row spot to see a performance by the lead singer of one of my all-time favorite bands. I wanted to be with my friends.
As it was last night, the mood here in Austin this morning is uncertain and surreal. Everyone I've talked to is shaken up. It's unclear if events will go on today as planned; it's unclear if people feel like they even should. The idea of going to panels about "the future of brand-building" this morning feels a little absurd, but, as some of us just agreed, I can't think of anything much more cathartic than seeing a soul-cleansingly loud Fucked Up set right about now.
We'll continue to keep you updated all week on what's going on here, but for now, it feels appropriate to take a pause from the cycle of "post it by the morning or the set didn't happen!" I'll catch Albarn's show later in the week. There will be time—and for the moment I'm newly appreciative of that fact. I saw some great music last night. I'll tell you about it at some point.

"But the problem now is that everyone’s fought so long for the rights of the individual that it’s finally gotten through to the other side, and individualism got mutated and went all out of control. And now it’s just out-and-out selfish shit, where the rights of the individual have blended with capitalism and made for a really ugly society. Punk rock was part of it.” He sighs dejectedly. “Individualism sounded like the most amazing thing, but now everyone’s just out for themselves.”

I'm finding him to be a font of inspiration lately, just trawling through interviews I can find online.

bill's illiterate.

i mean it's sad but he's so right about punk rock...but i would say it was co-opted

the Man said "This is dangerous, how do we assimilate it?"
the Man said "Well they are all about individuality and independence aren't they?"
the Man said "Oh, why of course. All cornerstones of the Capitalist illusion."

My takeaway on that particular comment (and from reading other interviews) about punk rock was that he was referring to how in its early inception it championed the idea of the individual, not in reference to how it's been co-opted into something less than authentic in modern times. That particular sentence had a weird placement and is kind of confusing. I blame that on it being an interview taking snippets of a longer conversation.

Unless I'm totally reading you wrong or it wrong. What I'm trying to say is that I think you can take that little sentence about punk rock out and not lose any meaning of the rest of the blurb. The part about punk only confuses it some.

no i think that early in its inception and continuing throughout it generally champions "individuality" but i think it should be more about breaking the status quo

i don't think it was co-opted by back room deals, but capitalism is going to sell the product on the values that support capitalism which is individualist consumerism. you know, buy this stuff and be unique like everyone else

Absolutely.

I think the overall point, specifically referring to punk, was that it was originally responsible for championing individuality (and going against the status quo) and here we are decades later where everyone is championing 'individuality' (lifestyle branding) and it sucks now. Because of the reasons you've stated.

well it dovetails neatly into my socialist bent, this post-industrial consumer capitalism is all about buying things to make yourself an individual, your clothes, your car, your music, your cell phone and all its apps, wallpapers and such...

sometimes it feels like this generation is fighting hard to not have anything in common with anyone else

what bands you like is some kind of value judgement on your personal character, so everyone gets super defensive about their musical choices and think it's relevant to mention in an article of people at SXSW killed by a drunk driver that you like blur a lot

i mean i can't believe this hasn't happened before, this town is wasted and driving all the time and SXSW is just a clusterfuck of the most delirious kind

Did the guy crash into the front of a building or did he hit a bunch of people who were running around in the streets/crossing when they shouldn't have been? Or possibly swerved to avoid hitting someone in the street and ended up hitting people in the front of a building? I'm sure there's more to it than "drunk driver slays pedestrians".

Just curious because I know that when there are mass gatherings of people on foot they do not obey traffic signals/crossing lights at all.

it's all true. have you heard anything about this new thing the trendies are trying to call normcore? it's basically anti-individuality via fashion. they gave it a cute name so it too can be packaged and sold.

he had eluded the police on interstate 35 and then got downtown where he plowed into a huge crowd.

yeah what is this the solid color no logo shit i've been doing for decades

aside from a couple band shirts and freebie tees, pretty much everything i wear has 1) no logo and is 2) a solid color (like black, usually)
there are some patterns

but seriously fuck logos, i'll take the generic polo not the one with the little horse on it fuck you

EXACTLY

I really don't want to get muscled out of shopping at the Gap just because standard American basicwear has replaced gaudy oversized neon colors.

But then again my Gap card has a "member since" date so I could use that to get credibility with hipster girls.
