the parts of Gish that remind me of Soundgarden's Down On The Upside
They both have this uptempo psychedelic hard rock early 70s feel at times. Gish is somewhat dreamier though.

There seems to be two main kinds of Gish-era songs. There are songs that are largely based around one or two chords or just have very simple structures (Window Paine, Starla, Drown, even Silverfuck could be counted as it came from this era) and there are songs that are slightly complex in their arrangement (Siva, Bury Me, Snail).
The first set of songs could have been written in a single jam session each because that's what they sound like, wheras the latter sounds like they were mulled over a lot longer. Lyrically, both sets of songs are rather sparse though. And then the Siamese Dream era came along and he songs became more considered and mulled over, and probably because of that, the songs are somewhat not as prominently psychedelic. |

Saying that there are literally only two kinds of Gish songs is like saying that Green Day literally only use two power chords.
