Default do you have garbage pickers in your neighborhood?

i finally caught a glimpse of one going through my trash. it's like seeing an angel. isn't this a sign of good luck in some cultures?

i couldn't tell what she took but she looked through everything and pulled half of everything out of the can (one big can, 2 boxes, and 3 bags full of non-kitchen/bathroom rubbish).

oh this reminds me

one time around 3am, my dog started freaking out which is unusual because he usually doesn't get all hyped up about much of anything but the postman (even people coming to the door he doesn't bark at). I look out the window and there's a guy gathering my pile of brush, and then he takes off running to a condo complex across the street with my brush. To this day I still don't know what the fuck that was about.

whenever I've put trash out by the curb it attracts a steady stream of "junk men". They're mainly looking for metal, which they can sell to scrap yards, but I've found them going through my recycle bin too.

I had 15 yard dumpster in my driveway for 4 days last summer. I found people climbing around in it ever single day it was there.

i once got paid $150 to fetch two dead rotting turkey that someone threw in a dumpster. 150 was half the price to call the dumpster guys. luckily the dumpster was empty and the turkeys were already in plastic bags.

it just smelled real bad cos it was summer.

When you say junk men, do you mean tweakers? Because those are the only ambitious scrap metal-ers I've ever heard of.

This guy keeps knocking at my door asking if he can buy week old pastries I'd thrown out for 25 cents on the dollar. It's less exciting than you'd think.

Whoa, Brendan you have a dog?

Also my parents had some. They were cool. Sometimes they'd ask us about taking something if they drove past the house as we were piling up waste. Good people. And they recycle. I got no probs with them.

I love garbage pickers. They are extremely prompt in collecting my old TVs, electronics and furniture. Whenever I see a pickup truck overflowing with shit I smile and wave and say "thanks for picking up my shit!"

No. I'm talking about juys who drive around in beat up old pick ups and take jobs hauling away piles of junk for cheap. Usually they have big pieces of plywood bolted to the truck bed to turn their pick up into a ghetto dump truck. Couple of guys in my neighborhood do that. they both have their phone numbers spray painted on the sides of their truck. I think one calls his "Joe's Junk" and the other guy has the worlds "Scrap Haulin'" written on his.

Scrappers.

Not to be confused with Scrapers

i see a few messicans rummaging through my apartment's dumpster now and then. they seem to make some good finds sometimes. i saw one old lady find a box full of clothes

i don't mind them but god i hate how the dumpsters are right out in the open. it makes the buildings look ten times trashier than they really are

when i lived in Boston we didn't have cans or anything we just put our bags on the curb every friday.

every friday morning real early all the old chinese people came by with sticks with pointy hooks on the end and rubber gloves and aprons and sometimes those paper face masks and RIPPED open EVERY bag on the block, took what they wanted, and left the rest scattered on the sidewalk. it's not the trash-person's job to pick up the garbage, just grab the bags. so whatever fell out stayed out. it got really really bad at one point. in the summer it stunk like whoa.

i left the house @5am and would sometimes catch them in the act and yell and chase them away. i dont care if you dig through a bin and walk away with my cans or anything you want really, but it became a public health hazard.

mostly recyclers, especially since this is a bottle deposit state. when i lived in albany my street was real quiet so i could always hear them making noise with all those glass bottles all night.

my building's trash is in a locked garage, so no

and at my bf's place in chicago the trash is in an alley behind the building that you can't see. so they could be there but i'd have no way of knowing.
