Default So, about that Metro farewell album.

I remember in 99/00 Billy posting song titles and short descriptions on the official site. This was post MACHINA but I’m not sure if it was before or after the farewell announcement. Does anyone remember these titles or is any of this screen-captured anywhere? I thought it was archived on Nachtkabarett but cannot find it. Is there anymore info on this potential release? I wonder what material they even had ready for a final album? I have often wondered if they had any of the Zwan stuff in the wings.

It's absolutely killing me that I can't find any info on those posts or song titles. The had a very political Zeitgeist like bent to them.

That would explain how they already had so much material when they did their first shows. Would also explain why Billy didn't want to release anything from that first (great) batch of songs. They would've been written for The Pumpkins to play and Billy wanted Zwan to have an identity of its own.

Isn't El Sol from the first batch of song? It's one of the rare 2001 survivor on MSOTS. I assume it would have ended up on an SP album anyway.

iirc, Black Wings Over America were the titles from a series of artwork/graphics that were hidden in the official SP.com html archive, which was discovered in 2000.

No official comment from the band or anything, but the theory was that either
1) it was a planned leg of the 2000 tour that was canceled but the artwork remained
2) it was the fictional tour of the fictional Machines of God band, which was scrapped but the artwork remains

Going through my old files from old hard drive backups, this is what I have in a Smashing Pumpkins folder from 2001. These might (or might not) be the images:

I have about 800GB of pumpkins stuff and have been sifting through it. I know it is definitely not the Black Wings Over America stuff. This was a fully written piece by Billy talking about songs. I know I have it transcribed somewhere.

I'd like to see that, because by my memory, he listed songs we already knew (Dross, Go, Cash Car Star) and he wasn't referencing this acoustic thing, he was referencing what became Machina II.

Could be wrong though.

I vaguely remember it was an On the Road blog, circa 2000, red font. I've found some photos from the O-site that are from the era.

Have you ever noticed that some Machina 2 songs don’t quite fit the “story” or sound? And some aren’t quite finished..someone rushing and upsetting people to fill out one last grand double albim.
By this time the idea of a proper farewell album had already been shot down.. way before!!!

It’s like a lotta things in the last 20+ years just all big talk tbh

The post-Machina farewell album I remember Billy talking about was about tree band writing, playing and recording songs every night on the tour. Something similar to the Residency songs. He said James and Melissa didn't like the idea, thus it never happened.

He also commented on his idea to record a new album during the band’s final stretch, which was met with resistance by other band members: “My original plan was to book the metro out for the whole month of January and make one last album, writing songs and recording them live in rehearsal and then playing them at night at the ‘shows’…can’t remember how many shows we would have done per week? Maybe 3 or 4. [James] Iha and [Melissa] Auf Der Maur hated the idea and said no. A shame, could have been amazing. Band was tight at that point and i was motivated to write more.”
