MySpace Creates Smashing Pumpkins Tribute Compilation
Participating Bands incl_ude: The Academy Is, The New Amsterdams, Panic! At The Disco, +44, Young Love, Ben Kweller, Test Your Reflex, The Bravery, Gliss, and Most Dangerous Race
By BusinessWire
LOS ANGELES, BUSINESS WIRE -- MySpace, in collaboration with Spin Magazine, today announced the upcoming release of a MySpace Smashing Pumpkins Tribute project featuring bands influenced by the legendary alternative rock act. MySpace, in collaboration with 10 bands, compiled the most meaningful Pumpkins tracks for each band to record and inclu_ded on the album honoring the band's contribution to the music industry. The multi-platform compilation is MySpace's first tribute album.

"The Smashing Pumpkins is one of the most influential bands of the MySpace generation," states Tom Anderson, co-founder and President of MySpace. "We're thrilled to honor the Pumpkins with the company's first tribute album."

The MySpace Smashing Pumpkins Tribute project will be released online on Friday, May 18 through June 18 on each of the participating band's MySpace profiles.

Through a partnership with Spin Magazine, the Smashing Pumpkins tribute CD will be inclu_ded free with their July newsstand issue on sale June 26. The issue will also incl_ude an editorial feature on the Tribute project including conversations with the bands on their involvement with the compilation and the Pumpkins' influence on their careers.

"Having had the unique perspective of playing in the band for two and a half years, I know firsthand what an amazing band the Smashing Pumpkins are," said Matt Walker, former Pumpkins band member and project contributor on the track, "Signal To Noise" by The Most Dangerous Race. "I think their scope has still yet to be fully appreciated. It is nearly non-existent for a band to be that successful and at the same time be so artistically challenging and uncompromising in their vision. I have been given a great opportunity to record a new song written for, but not incl_uded on, Zeitgeist. It is an honor as a friend and a fan to contribute to this MySpace compilation."

Completed track list inclu_des:
The Academy Is, "Mayonnaise" http://www.myspace.com/theacademyis
The New Amsterdams, "Thirty-Three" http://www.myspace.com/thenewamsterdams
Panic! At The Disco, "Tonight, Tonight" http://www.myspace.com/panicatthedisco
+44, "I Am One" http://www.myspace.com/plus44
Young Love, "1979" http://www.myspace.com/younglove
Ben Kweller, "Today" http://www.myspace.com/benkweller
Test Your Reflex, "Ava Adore" http://www.myspace.com/testyourreflex
The Bravery, "Rocket" http://www.myspace.com/thebravery
Gliss, "Rhinocerous" http://www.myspace.com/gliss
Most Dangerous Race "Signal to Noise" http://www.myspace.com/themostdangerousrace

Additional details on the MySpace Smashing Pumpkins Tribute project will be available shortly.

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/155...he_disco.jhtml
Due to their touring schedule, 30 Seconds to Mars will not be participating in the Smashing Pumpkins tribute LP that MySpace and Spin magazine have compiled. "It's not from a lack of love," said a spokesperson for the group. "The band loves the Pumpkins; their hectic touring schedule just didn't allow enough time to record the song." Selections from the album will be released online beginning Friday through June 18 on the MySpace profiles of the participating bands, which inc_ludes Panic! at the Disco, (+44), the Bravery and the Academy Is .... The CD will be inclu_ded free with the July issue of Spin, which hits newsstands June 26. ...

33 isn't bad, didn't listen to the band's actual music. Most of these bands are piss poor drivel.

I'm surprised Jared Leto(30 seconds to Mars) passed on doing it. He was in the 1979 video!!! come on you should be on the compilation.

Heh. They said they didnt have enough time to record something in the studio.

I would rather hear something well made, then some crap shit thrown together for a comp.

If people can't be happy about SP's return after seeing these horrible bands that are covering them... might as well avoid this board

I was kidding. The guy in the green with the longish hair just looks a lot like him when Jared was on My So Called Life.

The cover blows, but this is whole thing is a good PR move. I'm sure if they're releasing the compilation for free then SP will be on the SPIN cover with a featured article/interview about Zeitgeist.

Recorded for Zeitgeist but didn't make the final cut. Watch...it will be better than most of the songs on the album.

Great song title.

That was a surprisingly listenable cover. It was pretty damn far from perfect, but they didn't ruin the song by any stretch. If the other bands do about that well then this compilation won't be nearly as big a disaster as one might have thought.

I'm most curious about Matt Walker's cover of the Zeitgeist outtake though. Its kinda strange that our first full taste of new Pumpkins material in 7 years is going to be a cover by another band.

they won't. New Amsterdams are far and away the best band on this list (excluding Gliss, who I haven't heard).

Yeah They are definately getting spin cover.

and even if every single song sucks. The fact that Myspace is running a free tribute album compliation for the pumpkins, is kind of a big deal. I think they are the only band to recieve this treatment. Lets not just throwaway the power of myspace.

ALthough it would have even meant more expsosure if 30 seconds/deftones and MCR we're involved. Would give it more 'name recognition'

i hate MCR but if they had stuck around, along with deftones and the seemingly obvious silversun pickups, this would have at least had some intrigue. this is an embarassment to anyone over 16

The Silversun Pickups are not even directly influenced by the Pumpkins, I doubt they would have done this even if asked.
