I can appreciate music that focuses on literal instrumentation and music that focuses on the human aspect of musicianship, but I think there is generally a wide but happy medium where these things overlap. On the edges it becomes uninteresting to me. Hearing someone stoically play some near-impossibly complex piece off a sheet of music is as boring to me as my 15 year old cousin's garage band

ok i did some digging and found your cousin's band

soooo this album might actually be a work of staggering genius. There's a lot to digest. This is the most subtle album, and everything came to life in a different way with good headphones and hellatrees in my mind.

Incidentally, research is starting to show that we tend to appreciate music containing elements we are familiar with, and dislike music containing elements we are unfamiliar with.

So theoretically, through repeated exposure to the elements that appear unpleasant to us and by learning what they are, and how to identify them, we can become familiar with them, and in turn, more likely to accept and enjoy them.

I will not be testing this theory with repeated listens of Fiona Apple crapple
