I've tried again and again, but I've never really been able to get into the album. It's pretty as all hell but I just can't form any kind of emotional connection to it.

Exactly the same here. Don't really know what to do with it.

I became guitar obsessed via Siamese Dream. The whole album has been tabbed correctly for the most part, and you could just plug in the big muff and play along. Besides Sweet Sweet, I think everything is in standard tuning (or drop D) except Mayonaise. It bugged me that playing it in standard, the guitar in that song does not sound right... and then I found out that Iha had a different tuning. After playing it with that it made sense and it was so satisfying to hear it that way. Brian "that tab guy" set me on a path of figuring out things correctly.

Now take Loveless, which I have taken a stab at every single song year after year. The only songs I can definitively say I can play correctly is "Sometimes" and "When You Sleep". Every other one I am in the ballpark, but its a house of mirrors with those chords/tunings. Just watch people try and cover them on youtube, people doing the power chords on Only Shallow sounding like shit. Its so hard to get right. The correct tuning is out on "To Here Knows When" but I have yet to see anyone nail it.

In summary - not being able to play Loveless songs properly on guitar keeps pulling me back.

This guy gets pretty damn close. I managed to figure out how to play Who Sees You thanks to one of his videos.

I could have sworn he had a video on Blown a Wish, which is my favourite MBV song. There's next to no covers of that song on YouTube.

Yeah, I've never understood the fuss. Some cool guitar tones and stuff, but to me, the songwriting is kinda trite and boring. This opinion always shocks other music fans, but it's just my honest opinion.

by a country mile, but both records are in the top 0.001 percentile of guitar music ever put to tape

I kinda think about listening to Loveless in the same way I would think about listening to abstract/minimal house or techno music. If you go looking for the moments - that transition into the bridge or the lyric where the inflection is just right - you're gonna come up empty handed. But if you go in looking for 'the drift' - that spot where you're enmeshed in texture and atmosphere, kinda trance like, that's where the joy is. It's counterintuitive because songs like Only Shallow and When You Sleep definitely present as traditional rock songs with choruses etc but it's stuff like To Here Knows when - little looping rhythms, vocals mostly obscured, everything ephemeral, constantly slipping out of reach - where the magic happens.

I know, right? There aren't even any lyrics during the choruses.

Absolutely agreed.

While Loveless is (relatively speaking) quite musically simple, its main hallmarks are its uniquely dense production, which gives it a very physical feel, and its repetitiveness almost to the point of hypnotism. So it's best appreciated if you allow yourself to get "lost" in it.

Hoenst like how Corgan jacked the cherub rock riff from Rush? Or how the Siamese Dream album sound overall is directly derivative of Loveless? I mean isn't that why this thread even exists? Come on man.

Siamese Dream is a great rock album with pop sensibility and molded by the commercial nature of the industry. Loveless is an unabashed, uncompromising work of art and innovation in guitar sound. There's just no way around those two points.

Also, someone commented how being unable to play Shields' songs on guitar left him disconnected from Loveless while being able to play pretty much all of Siamese Dream. As a guitar player I understand the sentiment, but it's also further testament to Shields work as an artist because it's practically inimitable.

Loveless is a kind of "hmm that is very interesting" album while Siamese Dream is a get drunk and sing along and air drum album. They're very different things.

I think he was referring to all the vinyl reissues, all of which were either bootlegs or released without his knowledge or permission. The 2003 vinyl reissue on Plain Records was an "official" release, but it was sourced from the CD master. The 2012 CD remaster and the recent vinyl remaster were painstakingly put together by Kevin himself, and I haven't heard him say a bad word about them. I was under the impression that he was quite proud of them. All other CD reissues have the exact same master as the original CD release.
