Aren't there a lot of European new wave acts, as well?

I thought of new-wave as being more accessible and pop-oriented than post-punk. Like, an art-rock/art-pop reaction toward popular rock styles that had sort of grown stale at the time, but still keeping influences from genres with mainstream appeal, like disco and whatnot.

I'm not sure which of the two genres preceded the other, but it seems many artists fell into both post-punk and new-wave categories, because their catalogue included both radio-friendly and more obscure works (The Cure being a prime example of this), while some other artists would mostly fall into one or the other.

I wouldn't consider any of those five bands "post punk" per se except Joy Division, which is why I said if you are going to cast such a wide net under one label why not ******* these other tangentially related bands

I'd say The Cure is post-punk. I don't see how one can be gothic rock without being post-punk. It's a subgenre of post-punk, imo.

Unless we're talking about gothic metal or some shit, which shares no stylistic commonalities with gothic rock because if isn't even a descendent of punk at all. It's only gothic people the people dress all Victorian and shit.

The Smiths, I'd say aren't technically post-punk, but influenced a lot of the same bands that post-punk acta did, and had some similarities, despite having a different genealogy. So, it makes sense go talk about The Smiths and post-punk in the same context, but they are a bit different.

I'm just being super pedantic, though. In the end, it doesn't even matter (Linkin Park is post-punk).

I guess we're just gonna gloss over the fact that Elphenor casually called R.E.M. "dogshit" a few posts ago

You're truly outdoing yourself with that one, E-baby

Cure's first album is definitely post-punk and I'd extend that label to some degree through 17 seconds up to Faith, additionally call that Pornography gothic rock, and additionally apply the New Wave moniker to The Top up through Disintegration. I'd also count Disintegration as a goth rock album but I'd say they shed most traces of post-punk with Head On The Door; aside from the bassline to Fascination Street nothing really makes me think 'post-punk' on that album. Too wide in scope.

that's true I'm just saying it's the reason The Smiths being New Wave sounds weird

the UK acts of that variety get the term jangle angle pop

where as say in the US B52s and Pylon were labeled New Wave out the gate

every popular post punk band has been described as new wave by somebody

it's all under the umbrella of post punk for me

Mark E Smith and Morrissey both believed they could be vocalists because they saw a Sex Pistols gig

well I do think REM and Police are post punk and so is U2 and Billy Idol

they just can't all be sick like Pere Ubu (who also got the new wave tag lol)

Repetition of the same thought or physical action develops into a habit which, repeated frequently enough, becomes an automatic reflex.

I'm surprised you guys are so big on rap, considering it's the most masochistic music of any genre.
