Man how cringeworthy was American Gothic?

The Rose March was ruined by the constant OH overdubs, Again x3 is like substandard Goo Goo Dolls, Pox is legit one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in my life, and I can barely remember how Sunkissed goes.

Also don’t forget how Chris Isaak said “some call them rock, I prefer to call them American Gothic”

American Gothic is when it really hit for me that it was over. Hot garbage. From the title, to the art, to the terrible songs. I forgot about Pox but man that song stinks.

AG came out New Years' day 2008 but the last thing Jimmy did was G.L.O.W, November that year.

I'm guessing AG was probably what made him decide to split and G.L.O.W was one more rawk tune for old times' sake.

I've come around on The Rose March but most of it's just really fucking forgettable.

I agree apart from Rose March. That's probably one of my top 3 post reunion songs. Up there with some of their original line up material for me.

Agreed but that studio version was awful. Why didn't they just release an EP of the stuff from the Fillmore? That they setup and fucking recorded there.

That's what I don't get about Billy. He can't just put something out. It has to be this long unnecessary drawn out ordeal. AG was just studio butchery. Just release something as it sounds for once.

There's so many la la las and ohs in rose March it nearly sinks a top tier song.

American Gothic was awful. I remember a lot of people hoping that Zeitgeist was just a way for BC/JC to get back in the groove and that the music would be better from then on... Then it was GLOW, Superchrist and FOL and it was like "shit, this is actually worse than Zeitgeist" and then by the time American Gothic dropped, it seemed clear that things weren't going to get any better and that Zeitgeist was actually the high-water mark.

It just baffles me that at the residencies he wrote 10-12 good to genuinely great acoustic songs and then made a 4 song EP with one ruined residency song and 3 absolutely dreadful new songs.

I kind of liked American Gothic at the time, at least I liked it a lot more than Zeitgeist, and then TbK would prove to be much worse. I don't think it's nearly as bad as most people make it out to be, but it is pretty forgettable. At least TbK was remarkably bad.

I actually really liked it. He should have done a whole acoustic album like this. The songs are pretty and seem sincere and actually don't have cringeworthy lyrics. "Sunkissed" is exceptional. I'm not gonna retrograde hate on BC just to hate, only if he does something genuinely awful like Solara.
