I held off for awhile and was annoyed by everybody talking about it.. but a friend gave me the first season as a gift so I figured why not. And inevitably became one of those annoying people myself

If you can hold out a few years til it's over I'd do that and binge the whole thing. otherwise if you want a show to watch it's currently the best thing on right now

since you brought it up, i find the entire reek storyline, and theon's torture scenes, to be probably the worst thing that there was on game of thrones.
it's basically not far from seeing a snuff film. it went on for like a whole season.
i kept expecting something to happen to justify all this "buildup", but of course, it didn't build up anything. it just dissolved. which, in a way, makes it all worse.

i'm not going to stop watching it, though. at first i was utterly shocked when things like this happened, but now i understand that that's the niche the show is carving out for itself: it takes joy in creating something beautiful, and then ripping it apart.
the whole show basically tells the tales of how people's lives got fucked up, how they got torn apart from each other, or how much they suffer emotionally and\or physically.

when it's non stop you just stop being so invested in it, and become more anesthetized. and obviously the show bases too much of itself around these things.
it kind of stopped having an emotional base, and it's just an endless circle of fucked up shit happening to everybody.
