reality progressively gets worse but it's up to you to construct & foster a happy-go-lucky island within your own brain and deny all access to saddo info

Things pick up the pace in season two. But then it's cancelled in the midst of a mid-season cliffhanger.

my experience is that it’s become more complex and granular. more crap to deal with that begets more crap. but i do like the added nuance and near incomprehensible repercussions of having reproduced

saddo stuff is more profound and striking than ever (at the moment, anyway) — death’s imminence, missed opportunities, being shaped by vast and infinitely complex forces, no do-overs, etc, can really take one’s breath away, holy hell.

Whether or not things get better for me seems to depend on two factors

1. my decisions
2. luck

I have found that it is pretty bullshit how big a part luck plays. But if my decisions are the only part I have control over, it's probably worth considering what I can do with that. Maybe luck will undo whatever I try to do for myself. I gotta be prepared for that. But if it doesn't, I can either be in the same place I am now, or further toward something I consider better than this. So I just keep plodding along, expecting the worst.

I haven't studied depression remission rates, but my hunch is that most people struggling with it will have symptoms for the duration of their lives. I don't think very many people are ever "cured."

Likewise, somebody diagnosed with arthritis will likely also have arthritis for the rest of their lives. That doesn't mean that carrying on is futile. Even if we can't cure an illness, we've developed means to manage them in order to maintain a satisfactory quality of life.

I think that, as long as living seems preferable to dying more often than not, you're pretty much doing well, even if you've got depression.

yes, but then they get worse, and it hurts even more, and it makes the good times feel bad because they got your hopes up

I also suspect that depression is the kind of thing that will always hang around to an extent. I know it is their job to tell me this, but my therapist and psychiatrist have both told me that through treatment, depression does improve for most people though and although it might not be a "cure," the seratonin levels in your brain can actually be permanently improved via a few years of meds and cognitive behavioral therapy

Unless you have a mental health concern that may affect you negatively.

It does indeed get better. Idk, at least it did for me.
