So whatta y'all think of the surprise drop of the new Weezer Teal album?

Pretty cool surprise, especially considering they have a new album coming out in March.

Nothing really all that amazing, but there's a few pretty cool takes here. Not disappointing at all because no one was anticipating or expecting it.

I love this track, but this song can never not be good

a few other cool takes:

Isn't there a separate music forum for this stuff?

They banned me from there... I thought since there was already a Weezer thread on the SP side of things that it would be fair game

surely Weezer have the most self-titled albums of any band in history by this point, right?

oh god, they did "No Scrubs" lol

now this i might just listen to! also kinda curious about the TFF cover, even tho it's like the millionth time someone has done an official version of Rule the World in some form or another. i just fuckin' love all things Tears for Fears, even if it's simply "the Weez" covering them

The Weezer covers album is fucking terrible. Sounds like a wedding band.

Also Stephen Malkmus is about to drop a cringe, Teargarden-style “electronic album”, which sounds like ass.

So Billy isn’t the only 90’s rocker publically embarrassing himself.

These are just such boring, add nothing to the original covers. Why would anyone listen to these over the originals. At least the color they chose actually fits how inconsequential this music is.

Thumbs up

I'm glad Cuomo studied music at Harvard in order to produce the very finest shitty covers album

I'm sure loads of people rattle off a variation on that every time a new song comes out, but it's my first time saying it, so please respect my rights at this time

it at least has a bit of charm & self-awareness tho, something Teargy & most of Bill's work post-, like Future Embrace at least has been SORELY lacking

Some bands start as a cover band and some end up this way...to still be happy together...making some money.

I feel like this board should be renamed Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan/Weezer and Fuzzy made a moderator.

I think people are being too tough on the covers album. Pitchfork absolutely eviscerated it. It was just a fun little thing they released for free with no notice or announcement at all. Sure, there's nothing all that great about a lot of the tracks, but there's a few I really like. The Take On Me cover is great and adds a different more bubble-gum sorta sound which happens to work.

That's the thing Corgan should learn. If you drop something that is just having some fun or experimenting without any notice and it sucks, no one minds. But say if Weezer had hyped this covers album for months, people would've definitely been let down.

Relax man. It's not as if there's even a current thing to discuss regarding Billy or Smashing Pumpkins right now.

Funny when he forgets the lyrics at the 3:36 mark during 1979... You just can't help but love Rivers. He exudes charisma

Mals, you like =w= right?

I was just thinking what a smart band they are. Their 2 best b-sides were both licensed to movies (Susanne and You Gave Your Love To Me Softly) and the band both later recorded different versions of the tracks on C.D singles and such, that way they can still do what they want with the track and it served them well with their reissues. I believe it's usually very hard for a band to do what they want with a song if it's licensed to a movie soundtrack.

But to be fair, I think the Mallrats version of Susanne is better than the one that appeared on the reissue and CD single although the You Gave Your Love To Me Softly was done way better on the Pinkerton era CD single than it was on the Angus soundtrack.
