to be clear i don't think writing about this/singing about it means someone would or even wants to do something like this in reality but it's totally about rape.

i don't know how to describe it, but there's totally a reason trying to leave abusive men is very dangerous. false imprisonment/rape/murdering you and/or your children is a real threat
No, I know, I agree with you. I just think "I wanna break you" is a better lyric than "I wanna rape you" in terms of the situation the song is trying to depict. As clearly abusive as he is, it is not by chance that he doesn't say he wants to rape her. That doesn't mean that he isn't heavily implying that rape is on the cards - he absolutely is, but he comes just short of saying it for a reason. His persona in the song wants us to think, "this is a fucked-up, mutually abusive relationship" - and maybe he wants HER to think so too. If he said rape, it would shatter the illusion; it's the lightbulb moment where we all think, "Right, I'm out of here," and he doesn't want that to happen.

I think this is a disgusting song, but it's also a good song because it manages to express all the violence and the half-truths and the manipulation. It wouldn't work if he was any more blunt than he already is.

They were definitely on the outs during MCIS recording.

I read it as an expression of abstract rage. To say it is about rape and murder is to take it a little too literally, I think. A disintegrating marriage may have intentioned the shifting POV from man / woman / man about the violence of passion, sex, loss, identity (no single subjective state), and the unfolding of theatrical confusions.
