BLENDER: The 40 Worst Lyricists In Rock
39 • Billy Corgan
Pretentious? Moi? The suspicion that Corgan believes himself a poet was confirmed in 2004 when a collection of his atrocious verse, Blinking With Fists: Poems, was published. Whether with the Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan or solo, Corgan traffics in the overwrought intellectual despair of a spurned teenage diarist. On “Cupid de Locke” he uses the words hath and ye entirely seriously. That he delivers them in a grating, nasal whine doesn’t help, either. Worst lyric: “’Cause you’re all whores and I’m a fag/And I’ve got no mother and I’ve got no dad/To save me the wasted, save me from myself/I lie just to be real and I’d die just to feel” (Smashing Pumpkins, “Tales of a Scorched Earth”) --- http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?ID=2882 |

hm. i sort of agree with that blurb. but then again, some of the lyrics billy's written have connected with me like no other lyrics have. it's a toss up.
when he's good, he's great. when he sucks, he sucks hard. |

funny that the writer went all the way back to 1995 to get some questionable lyrics... when he could have used more recent examples from a newer album album, say... zeitgeist to make his point.

They should have switched around Billy and Anthony Kiedis, though. And yeah, where's Tori? I love her, but seriously... |

yeah they put him right up there next to Paul McCartney- the most drooled over, guy with a guitar, in time probably. so he's in great company!

I have always thought of Billy to be one of the best lyricist out there. The man writes lyrics that actually make you THINK. I don't understand what the vast majority of SP songs even mean!

That's pretty pathetic, I mean even a casual or non-pumpkins fan would recognize tonight, tonight as a lyrically excellent song from among their singles. But I don't get it, how can the list ******* so much extremely mainstream music and bother to ******* the pumpkins, you basically have the whole of rap music, pop music, those generic crappy alternative bands with kurt cobain-esque vocals, alternative bands that simply suck lyrically such as Interpol... you could spend a couple hours listening to basically any radio station, rock or otherwise, and find 40 vastly worse lyricists.

i love the lyrics to cupid de locke. its a song that aims to be sweet and cloying and does a wonderful job at it.
nor do I mind TOASE. really, nothing lyrically bothers me in SP's music aside from post SP1 material. i think you guys are kinda picky. |

why did billy have to be so bad at writing bad lyrics...
39/40 is not even the worst at being the worst. |

I love the TOASE lyrics.
He has worse lyrics, like "And now I'm with now, Inside your world of wow" TEITBITE is still a great song though. |

Hi, my first post. Been reading a while, thought I'd sign up. Please don't kill me.
Ahem, anyway, I honestly don't pay much attention to Corgan's lyrics, I often get the feeling he sings whatever comes to mind or rhymes: the power of the music is so strong (generally) that you can personalize the lyrics anyway, for yourself. It doesn't necessarily matter what he's singing. On the flipside, he can be very good, like on "The Everlasting Gaze", though probably not to everyone's taste. Overall, I don't think he deserved to be on the list of all-time worst lyricists. |
