Question SYnth effects

It seems a lot of people on this board know their stuff in the studio so i was hoping to get a little advice as i am just starting off.

I want to achieve an effect like the one used in the track 'sweet love for planet earth' by fuck buttons

(starts about 4.30)

I think this is an arpeggiator? I am recording in garage band and hastily bought the cheapest midi controller i could find. I googled arpeggiator patches for garageband but only found loops.

I know i could explicitely program the midi track to simulate the effect but i want to play it live. Any advice? Any opinions how else to achieve this effect?

thanks!

I think there's cheaper ones out there. But what I do is I plug it into my laptop and you can use it to modulate any midi item in realtime. There's an x and y axis and in both you can input the velocity or pulsewidh or whatever. Its basically a live performance arpeggiator and I know its what fuck buttons use. So does radiohead

do you know if these mini pads can do the job? you said you can plug the kaoss pad right into your computer. Looking at these, i am not sure how the ins and outs would work but they are affordable and the idea of it being a peripheral to the laptop appeals to me, since i could presumably run anything through

yeah to my knowledge those should work as well. As long as they hve a midi port but I dunno why those wouldn't
