Default Interpol - Marauder

Hell of an album. Probably the closest they’ve gotten to sounding like their debut album. The rover is one of the best songs they’ve ever done.

I saw this band at the 9:30 Club about 8 years ago or so and I seriously have never been so bored out of my mind at a concert. But I only went because a friend of mine had a free ticket.

I think it's not bad. I don't actually like the debut much.

What? I don't. I bought it when it came out and thought it sounded too much like Joy Division so I sold it.

I saw White Lies around the same time at 9:30. Very similar band so you would have probably hated that show too.

Never heard White Lies, but if they're anything like Interpol, then yeah, lol.

TOTBL doesn't sound that much like JD, to be honest
Was mostly Paul Banks vox, I guess it was the most Ian-Curtisy thing people had heard since 1980 or something
but the music was way more hopeful and "lush"

Arcade Fire kicks the shit out of Interpol, like in a gruesome street fight leave you to bleed in the gutter kind of way.

The new Arcade Fire is actually terrible, but it took them 5 albums to put out something bad, whereas Interpol was pretty much done after their debut. Consider also that Catherine Wheel has previously asserted people abandoned Interpol because their music became too different and experimental compared to TOTBL. There is a lot to unpack there.

I'd say the trajectory for Interpol and Arcade Fire has been pretty similar as far as quality of albums go. Both had classic debuts, sophomore albums that were decent but not as good as the debut, and then hit or miss for the rest of the albums.

The new Interpol is decent but I actually think the last one El Pintor was stronger. They're like the AC/DC of post-punk, they just kinda keep making the same album over and over again. There's not much versatility to their sound.

I think Neon Bible is as good as Funeral. The Suburbs could potentially have been as good but it is bloated with some unnecessary tracks that detract from overall quality. The back half of Reflektor is absolutely amazing, probably their strongest run of songs on any album, but the first half is kind of boring

I liked Reflektor because it is groovy

but otherwise Arcade Fire is like listening to nothing

other post punk revival of 00's was a lot more fun at least ie Art Brut, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes

I mean to be fair Arcade Fire is classic rock or "alternative" rock and not punk anything so judging it by unfair criteria

Yeah I could never get into Arcade Fire either. They always seemed like one of those bands everyone tells you that you SHOULD like. And whenever that happens, my automatic reaction is, “Fuck you.” That’s probably not fair to them, but I doubt I would have connected with their music either way.

I dabbled w/ Funeral when it came out but kinda drifted from it within the year

I do remember liking some shit on there quite a bit, I think they actually recorded in a studio about 15 min away from me (Reflektor, maybe?) but I don't think I've heard a note of it
