So why exactly does sifting through some old archival recordings take exactly 13 people?

do they even get access to the old archives?
or are they expected to just compile lists based on splra.org & spfc.org listings...
probably just the latter.

neither. all of us basically get bundles of songs or shows pulled from the archives, then we have a certain time frame to vote on what could possibly be sold or packaged together. as i previously said, all this material is filtered through billy in some aspect. at first he claimed to not have the time to do this, but apparently that is not the case.

to answer the previous question, no it doesn't take 13 people exactly to listen to all this stuff. "lucky 13" is clearly just reminiscent of the song title. additionally, it helps to have more than just a handful of people who are from varied parts of the world and have different opinions. i certainly don't see myself as special or privileged to have been called on for this project, but it's still pretty nice hearing unreleased material. specifically, i heard a really nice mix of LMGTWTY recently that was beautiful.

Why choose 13 people to evaluate though? Seems like a strange number to settle on... Why not 10, 15 ETC...

Isn't this also a behind the scenes thing?... So why is there a need to name this "group" of people anything? It seems like just a pompous excuse for the "positive" fans to strut around the SP cyberspace.... "I'm one of the lucky 13 to be involved with this!"

i could see going this way with it, as the name unfortunately resembles some special winners kids club, but i'm sure that's intentional even though it may not be tasteful. the way i see it, there probably aren't even 13 people and this group has already failed twice. *points to scoreboard

right, i'm just strutting around bragging about songs you guys will eventually have; likely even before you stop complaining about how many people should be chosen to preview the stuff

tell ya what fuzzy, our little elitist group is meeting tomorrow in my tree house and i'll make sure to discuss bringing you in since clearly you have a greater understanding of something you know nothing about. i'll get back with you tomorrow after we vote.

I've had several herniated disks. I have a reclining chair at my workstation with a foot rest under my desk. It helps a lot to be able to lean back. I'm getting a stand-up desk soon to try out for a while.

In your latest issue of Circus, Vol 27 #4, you included a "Fact Sheet"
of the Smashing Pumpkins. I'm not sure what methods of research you use
for such things, but I found it quite obvious that the information was
rather heavily "borrowed" from my own Smashing Pumpkins "Frequently Asked
Questions" (FAQ) file, which is distributed online via Usenet, email,
and WWW...

First, you give an "about the band" section. While the format is
similar to the corresponding sections of the other bands' fact sheets,
the information is obviously that which was taken from an early fan club
newsletter, and which appears in the FAQ. There are several errors here,
as well: James' real name is not "James Jonas Jaded Iha' as it says in
the newsletter section, nor is his middle initial even J- the newsletter
entries were slightly satirical. You also messed up on D'Arcy's birthday
(May 1st, not January 5th), and misspelled "Chamberlin" (information in
the newsletter was provided SIC, but I've corrected the spelling on Jimmy's
last name for future reference...)

Second, in the "Origin of Name" section, the entire thing seems to be
a rewording of what's been stated in the FAQ, from the newsletter story
to the explanation of the British usage of "smashing" as an adjective.

For the "Covers" section, I must say I am deeply appalled. There is
absolutely no way you could have retrieved this information from
anywhere else, and it is exactly what is written in the FAQ. Some of
these covers have never been officially released, and have only been
played live. Even the "partial" covers have been listed as such. It is
also obvious that you had an older version of the FAQ, since the
"Out of Focus" entry was corrected at least two FAQ releases (months)
ago - the original band is Blue Cheer, not Love Battery.

The "Rare SP Songs" section is another that conveniently appears in the
FAQ, although I would hardly call the 1979 b-sides "rare"... If those
are rare (as opposed to the vinyl-only "Siamese Dream" and "Purr
Snickety" that you've listed, the "Daughter" flexi-disc, etc.), then
what about Drown (the Singles soundtrack), Glynis (No Alternative), and
other b-sides from Lull, Peel Sessions, and the rest of the singles (I Am
One (although the B-sides appear on Pisces Iscariot), Cherub Rock, Today,
Disarm, Rocket, Bullet w/ Butterfly Wings, Zero, and Tonight, Tonight)?

The "Songs That Members of SP Other Than Billy Sing On" is another
section that is a blatant excerpt from the FAQ. 3 of the songs listed
under James haven't been released, and it would be very unlikely for you
to get this information (and in the exact same format) from anywhere
else. It seems that all you did was rearrange and reword a few things.

What else? Hmm, Scratchie Records and Starchildren are mentioned there,
as is the whole deal w/ Billy recording the tracks on Siamese Dream for
speed/efficiency purposes... Billy's marital status, the keyboardist deal,
and the Simpsons announcement also appear in there.

It appears that the only things you have listed here which -weren't-
from my FAQ are extremely common knowledge (i.e. your -very- "Basic
Discography"). It surprised me to find such an extensive discography
listed for the Foo Fighters' info page, and such a meager listing here,
when you could have just as easily ripped info from Roger Janssen's rather
exhaustive SP discography, one of many other online sources listed in the
FAQ, as you did the rest of the info...

Since no credit was given to the source of this information (unlike
quotes on the Foo Fighters' page, credited to the official band bio),
you've waded pretty far into what could probably be legally called
"plagairism." Here's the legal disclaimer which appears at the beginning
of my FAQ:

The Smashing Pumpkins FAQ is copyright (c) 1995-96 by Eric Agnew.
It is freely distributable online through Usenet newsgroup, email, and ftp.
It may not be used for commercial purposes, nor may any charge be imposed
for its distribution. Mass distribution or otherwise non-personal use is
prohibited without written permission, except where noted above (usenet,
ftp, etc.) This file may be stored in an archive, but the most recent
version should always be available there, or a pointer to the URL should
be provided. As always, give credit where credit is due.

Since Circus magazine is obviously both a "commercial purpose" and a "non-
personal use", and you have neither received permission nor even credited me
for the information, it seems you've violated my copyright statement...

What bothers me isn't that you put this information out, but that you
failed to give credit to the source of this information. I'm not much for
legal action, but I would highly appreciate a published apology, and credit
given where due.

This message is most likely too long to be printed verbose in the "E-MAILBAG"
section, but I'd like at least the first and last (above) paragraphs and a
summary of the error corrections, along w/ the closing & URL to be printed,
should editing/trimming be necessary.

You may also wish to post a short notice to the Smashing Pumpkins Usenet
newsgroup, alt.music.smash-pumpkins, since they're all very aware of this
as well. A copy of this message is also being posted there and on
Listessa, the SP mailing list.

If other such "Fact Sheet" articles have such heavily-used informational
sources similar to mine, I'd suggest that those be credited as well... The
internet is a very good resource for providing information. But this
information still retains the legal properties of other media... I'm not
a legal/copyright freak, I just believe that credit should be given where
due.

Sincerely,

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS
ARCHIVE NEWSLETTER #1

Hello SP World!!

Welcome to the first edition of the Archives Newsletter! I'm planning on writing a blog and newsletter once a week. The first thing that I want to talk to you about is my job and what we're doing. As a fan of the band for many years, I have always hoped the band would release old shows and demos. There are a lot of misconceptions out there that it would be so easy for the band to release (insert title here) show or demo. Now being on the other side, I can see that it is a lot more difficult to do that. There is a large process that we have to go through in order to get a recording ready to release. Looking through the archive, there is an overwhelming number of live and studio recordings. The first thing we have to do find something that is worthy of release. Since Billy has been focused on new things, work with the archive has been slow. This is where I come in. My job is to work in the archive and work on finding the best items to release. There is a lot to choose from. Some of the items being discussed are the 12/2/00 Metro show and the unfinished Adore Documentary. Aside from those two things, there is a mountain of great stuff. In the coming weeks, I'm going to be giving updates on the treasures I find.

The next subject that I want to talk about is the process on how to deliver this stuff to you. I want to expand on Billy's idea of a subscription service that I mentioned in the blog. Going through and finding material that is suitable for release is a very in-depth process. The idea of a subscription service is where you can sign up for a yearly subscription, and in return you will receive a guaranteed number of tracks and releases. These releases will be from all eras of the band. Some items may not be up to the quality of a professional release, and may be rawer sounding. This could mean a track of the band rehearsing that might not sound good enough for the general population, but Billy might say that it would be good for the subscription service. We would put it up because that is the only version of that song. This is for the type of fan that is interested in getting unreleased live and studio tracks. This is the Holy Grail. One example is that you'll pay $300 for the subscription, and we'll give you 200 releases. For those of you who don't want to sign up for a subscription, we'll still sell some material to you, but the subscription members will get it first. If you don't want to purchase anything, we are also looking at distributing some material for free. Basically, if you want to get everything, you want to take a look at the subscription service.

The reason why we're talking about a subscription model is that if the band just releases individual shows for sale, we wouldn't have a budget to work with to make it a long-term project. The subscription service would automatically give us a budget to prepare and distribute material to you. If you have any ideas or comments about the subscription service, please let me know. My e-mail is [email protected]. If you're on the message board, please voice your opinion on the SP Archive Project Forum in the Live Recordings/Collecting/Trading forum.

Frank
