I'm glad that another big budget feature film hasn't been made. It would almost certainly wind up being a shitty pastiche of CGI effects and silly set pieces. I recently listened to a podcast discussion that got into the Lynch film. One comment that I thought was spot on was that the Dune universe was analogue, not digital. There are no computers. No touch screens. etc. I can't imagine any of today's film companies respecting that.

the SciFi channel miniseries was a fucking abortion. awful. complete with shitty cable production values. I was actually happy that paramount scrapped their attempt a few years ago to do a feature film.

Adam's Apples

had seen it once 10 years ago, felt like rewatching since I hardly remembered it and the Mads Mikkelsen marathon needs to be continued. It's incredible silly, but hilarious nontheless.

one of these days I'll have to start watching Hannibal just to get more Mikkelsen.

It's such great black comedy. I hope this viewing was part of your bid to work for Anders Thomas Jensen, too.

Hannibal will only make you feel kind of deflated as you see him doing his absolute best with a terrible script and patently unreasonable plot arcs. Scratch that idea and just go with De grønne slagtere or Mænd & høns, next.

It's a shame that the rest of the world finally catching up has resulted in mostly terrible opportunities such as James Bond movies, Rihanna music videos, and a forthcoming Star Wars spin-off.

Ex Machina. 8/10

Predictable ending right from the beginning though.

Lucky for him that he's male, as an actress turning fifty this year couldn't possibly hope for the same future prospects.

Speaking of video games, do you have any interest in Shadowrun? I'd only just noticed that the latest installment is out and began playing it last night.

Not so far, I'm afraid. I'm only into the early stages, but it's currently playing out similarly to the previous two.

I didn't get Repo Man. It's meant to be an '80s classic, but I don't know why.

Finally watched Withnail & I after years of people recommendoing it, and I enjoyed it a lot, especially Richard E Grant's performance

Yeah, my partner's got a really good idea for making dolls. His name's Presuming Ed. His sister give him the idea. She got a doll on Christmas what pisses itself. Then you've got to change its draws for it. It's horrible, really, but they're like that, the little girls. So we're going to make one that shits itself, as well. He's an expert. He's building the prototype, now.

Last movie... Pixels - It wasn't the greatest, had some cheese and some fun moments but A loved it and found it funny... I liked some of the 80's scenes.

I watched a strange movie with Emilio in it from the 80's awhile back.

Men & Chicken (Mænd & Høns, 2015)

Few mintues in and I was pissed off about minor things, because you can tell at the beginning the film deserves better. For example right before the opening credits, a narrative starts (in an idiotic fairy tale voice) - telling you what the film is about. great, fuck off with that.
Basically it was my fault for starting to watch and instantly look for perfection: didn't like the soundtrack, the sound effects are off (guy gets hit with a wood board - plonk), also the editing is too jumpy, blaaaa. (The botched ending however is abysmal.)

Since I watched the film Adam's Apples by the same director/writer/main actors a few days prior, some recurring themes are more than obvious now. As if he wrote one gigantic script, and then went on a whiteboard to pick out parts for each (like life story and some character traits, the doctor in one film is the town mayor in the other etc.)

But 15 minutes in the story picks up, I was just enjoying it. Hilarious dialogues, good acting (notably Nicolas Bro as Josef), the story is absurdity at its best, the film had won me over. I laughed so hard, you can't resist this humor even if you start watching it as stubborn as I did.
The film also did a good job at reminding me that in Denmark animal brothels were legal until recently, and provided a new perspective on chicken. And has the damn best bible reading I ever heard: "Abraham's undiagnosed schizophrenia escalates..."

The location where most of the story takes place is just... amazing, like a character on its own.

Eventually I did stop laughing, though. Isaac the bull is a bit much to handle. I'll watch it again some day, I feel like there is so much you miss with only one run.

Also Mikkelsen's different look (not sexy for once) made it easier for me to truly appreaciate how good an actor he is, no "ui he handsome" distraction.

If I'd had to find a label for these Anders Thomas Jensen & Mad Mikkelsen films, I'd go with "charmingly insane."
tl;dr: 8/10, would highly recommend.

Finally saw this, the 4k remaster:

The performances are mostly great, of course Peter O'Toole in the title role is famously good.

Cinematography is what takes the cake in making this a piece of film history - many long shots of the desert, trekking on camels, which gives a sense of space and time to the impossible journey that Lawrence leads.

Could it be edited down? Could the dialogue be a bit sharper? Yes, it could. But much like the films of other classic auteurs, that's part of the charm.

If you're keen for an incredibly captivating Nicolas Bro performance and haven't already seen it, I can't think of a better way to go than Offscreen. It is rather unique in that he plays himself, serving as both protagonist and cinematographer.

It is best enjoyed by knowing nothing of the story, so you'll want to go with the trusty approach of reading nothing at all about it.

I'll definitely get that one then, thanks!

that is after rewatching Flickering Lights and Brothers, and Bleeder. And then I'll have to try out my new Danish skills, I feel like I ALMOST understand it now haha.

I like to think that not even the Danish understand their language and simply pretend that there's a conversation happening.

Strangely enough, Jaime Lannister doesn't sound quite like the rest of the ever-reliable Danish acting brigade in En chance til. Call me ignorant, but I really wouldn't have thought that such a tiny country could give rise to regional accents. This reminds me, too, that you can catch him starring alongside Mads in a Danish-Icelandic film named Vildspor. I don't remember it being quite up to the standard of the other recommendations I've forced upon you, but there's your dual penchants for Mikkelsen and Icelandic filming locations to consider.

i hate (half)watched 500 Days of Summer cause it came on and i thought it would be an entertaining thing to do this while doing other stuff and i can't even begin to explain how much twee bulshit that is. Zooey deschanel is the fucking worst. This is worse than garden state. 7.8 on imdb though. kill me now.

Sinister 2 - 1/5

OMG, this movie is terrible. After revealing the entire mystery at the end of the first movie, this one does nothing but amp up the (usually jump scary) appearances of Bughuul, instead of furthering the mythology it just relies on the first movie's foundation. The acting by James Ransone (So & So) and Shannyn Sossamon are atrocious, this feels like a direct to video sequel to a good movie.

Watched Mad Max, The Road Warrior at my neighborhood art house theatre last night. I'd forgotten how indie and low budget it was. Over the years I think I've seen the original Mad Max at least 10 times. But I hadn't watched Road Warrior in a long time.

I also saw Fury Road last weekend and I will give it 5 out of 5 stars. I was impress. Much action so cool. I wish I'd seen it in IMAX earlier this year when it was showing nearby.
