High Violet is excellent. It takes probably 5-6 listens to sink in. The new Jenny Lewis is awesome too.

Foals - Total Life Forever
Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame

Shame, Shame is probably my favorite of the year; so much underwhelming stuff this year it's kind of remarkable. Even Total Life Forever is top heavy.

Single of the year: "As We Enter" - Nas & Damian Marley
If It Was An EP It Would Be Great - The Suburbs

i haven't listened to sufjan stevens since seven swans, but i really like his new ep. perhaps the title track could go in the guilty pleasures thread for me.

pantha du prince - black noise
skullflower - strange keys to untune god's firmament
four tet - there is love in you

but i've almost exclusively been listening to 70s stuff

What's so marvelous about the music that everyone is nominating? Are any of these albums by bands that make bleepy, glitchy, shouty, jangley indie cunty music and wear equally cunty neon fluorescent clothes, sunglasses indoors, and 50's greaser hairstyles?

I think when someone uses the word "hipster" what they really mean is "I'm jealous that you listen to more obscure music than I do."

Well, I'm not. Educate me.

I infrequently listen to a radio station that I kind of hate; as far as radio goes, it's the lesser of two evils. It plays a lot of wanky indie shit, but it also plays a decent amount of stuff that I like, and it's the only radio station that does that.

The stuff it plays that I don't like brings to mind the ranty description I gave.

Funny thing...

On the other boards I post at, there were some "Hipster bashing" threads, and I found myself getting offended. Wasn't sure why... Then a bunch of people called me a hipster. I was like "Huh? I'm not a hipster, I'm like really nerdy! I'm not cool at all..."

So I emailed Mason and was like "Hey, am I hipster? Someone called me a hipster but I don't think I am." And he replied "Are you fucking serious?! You're one of the most elitist and opinionated people I know!"

So there you have it folks.

My favourite music era is late '80's/early '90's. Any recent bands I like will be heavily influenced by that period, (Fleeting Joys, The Enright House) or will have lasted since that era (Sonic Youth, NIN, Radiohead)

So, excuse the bias towards that era in this list f my absolute favourite bands:

My Bloody Valentine
Sonic Youth
Radiohead
Slowdive
Joy Division
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Aphex Twin
Ride

Artists which I'm not nuts crazy about, but still am very interested in:

Velvet Underground
Boris
Leonard Cohen
Sigur Ros
Pixies
Nine Inch Nails
Queens of the Stone Age
Gorillaz
Television
Neil Young

And some bands that I haven't heard extensively but want to get into because I know that I'll like/love them:

Dinosaur Jr.
Pavement
Swervedriver

Maybe you should actually try to listen to the rest of the album before making your mind up.

I will freely admit that I really like the album, but I hate it when people do this. It is just as bad as when people say they do not need to read the book because they've seen the movie already.

i think it's a perfectly valid reason to not listen to an album. If I hear something on the radio that really doesn't fit my taste I'm surely not going to check out if I perhaps find the album is fantastic, because that's not going to happen.
