here's a press release i just got from my nbc rep:

The networks of NBC Universal will come together to air "Live Earth: The
Concerts for a Climate in Crisis" an unprecedented global event on July
7. From the producers of "Live 8," this monumental music event will
bring together more than 100 of today's hottest artists and two billion
people to focus the world's attention on the global climate crisis and
what can be done to reduce global warming. The networks of NBC Universal
will broadcast nine legendary concerts from the seven continents, all
raising awareness of the solutions to the global climate crisis.

Coverage on the networks of NBC Universal is as follows:

NBC will broadcast a three-hour primetime special (8-11 p.m. ET/PT)
featuring highlights of performances from around the world, including
live moments from the U.S. concert at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.
Hosted by Ann Curry ("Today") with Carson Daly ("Last Call with Carson
Daly"), the special will also feature the biggest and brightest stars of
today with information on what viewers at home can do to help with
environmental and conservation issues.

Bravo will present a live 18-hour broadcast and "best of" moments from
the concerts from 8 a.m. ET on July 7 to 2 a.m. ET on July 8. For online
users, www.BravoTV.com will feature live blogging about the show, tips
and features on how to live a greener life, and a complete schedule of
Bravo's on-air concert moments. And for conservationists on-the-go,
Bravo offers green tips and 30-minute alerts for upcoming performances
via text message.

Sundance Channel and Universal HD will air 22-hour live broadcasts and
"best of" moments from the concerts from 4 a.m. ET on July 7 to 2 am. ET
on July 8. Universal HD is the only channel where the entire day's
concerts will be broadcast in high definition.

Telemundo will broadcast a one-hour special from 7-8 p.m. ET (July 7)
and mun2 will broadcast a two-hour special from 5-7 p.m. ET (July 7).
Both specials will feature the hottest Latin acts performing at the
concerts including Shakira, Enrique Iglesias and Mana among others.

CNBC will feature a seven-hour primetime broadcast from 7 p.m. ET on
July 7 to 2 a.m. ET on July 8.

MSNBC will broadcast special coverage of this global concert event
throughout the day with live reports from the concerts in New York and
London.

The "Live Earth" concerts will take place in New York, London, Sydney,
Tokyo, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Hamburg and Istanbul.
Some of the hottest musical acts scheduled to perform *******: Madonna,
Bon Jovi, The Police, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Kanye West, Melissa Etheridge, John Mayer, Faith Hill, Shakira,
Mana, Black Eyed Peas, Fall Out Boy, Enrique Iglesias, Duran Duran and
many more. The 24 hours of music across all seven continents will
deliver a call to action and the solutions needed to answer the call.
Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign led by The
Alliance for Climate Protection and its Chair, former Vice President Al
Gore, to move individuals, corporations and governments to take action.
The concerts will be produced by Control Room, of which Kevin Wall is
the CEO. Wall won an Emmy as worldwide executive producer of "Live 8"
and has produced numerous live concert events.

Right, we need to find the schedule. I have XM, which will be broadcasting everything, so I need to know which what time (and channel) to record.

SVT-HD will be broadcasting 22 hours ("the entire show") in mpeg4/DD5.1.
I can't recall the exact bitrates, but it's like 15 mbit/s total and 640 kbit/s DD5.1 audio.

I'll record the Pumpkins show, at least.

While on the subject, is there any reasonably priced way
that one can both make a HD-DVD, and then burn it?
Im talking software and hardware.. I haven't really been keeping track of things.

What up Per? We meet again.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=705146

It's a simple process, and you can author an HD DVD to standard red laser media (i.e. dvd-r/dvd+r). It can then be played back either via PC or any stand alone HD DVD player, including the Xbox 360 add on. Incidentally, the Xbox 360 add on can be used with a PC too, it has a standard USB 2.0 interface.

The only caveat with the process I linked to is that you have to author in MPEG-2. So your AVC would have to be transcoded by the Ulead software. Since AVC is includ3d in both the HD DVD and Blu-Ray spec, hopefully there will be authoring software available soon that supports both AVC and VC1 natively.

HD Pumpkins in 3 days.

Yeah.. I'll figure something out.. I would like to keep it in mpeg4 if at all possible..
Anyhow, I can do it any which thirteen ways once I have a clean source on my hdd.

If I can't make anything grander of it I'll just clean it up and post it on usenet
and some torrent sites in a format suitable for HTPC playback.

Are you going to make the high-def stuff from S.F. available online? If so, how are you planning on distributing it? Authored as HD DVD, Blu-Ray, or as encoded high-def file(s)? If it's the latter, what codec are you going to use? My vote would be for either VC-1 or MPEG-2, but that's just because they are part of the HD formats spec and are compatible with my hardware.

I don't know, I was watching the Al Gore interview on the Today show a few days ago. He said "We are going to reach out to 2 billion people" or some shit like that. They are way over estimating. Maybe Al Gore is smoking too much pot.

This is GMT-5, right?
(ie, 6 hours BEFORE local time in Stockholm, Sweden)?

Oh, and it's 8:52 PM (20:52) for Smashing Pumpkins, right?

I've got it recording from the SVT-HD and also the SD transmission
from SVT2/SVT1.

I don't know if the svt2/1-broadcast is the greatest one,
but it's pretty nice regardless, and if no one puts up a SDTV version,
I have one ready to go.

If anyone else is recording this in HD, please leave a note here.

EDIT:
Anyone have the other start times? (for the other gigs)

Peace,
/Per

Excellent! We are only getting a shit broadcast here in Germany from N24 (news channel). They constantly talk over the music and cut concerts for the weather forecast. These bastards!

It would be really cool if you could just torrent the HD files for those of us who don't even get a local HD broadcast...

Thanks in advance!

Prosieben HD is airing this, if Im not mistaken.
I guess you don't have a dish, since Germany is pretty much
ideal if you want (FTA) HD.

But yeah, I'll torrent the .ts files, make HD-DVD/Blu-Ray,
whatever I can manage.. (I've yet to try the latter)
