Default An interesting theory I read on Reddit

So as we all know Billy gained a bunch of weight around the Teargarden era and that was when he started wearing the spray-tan and was all jovial in the public eye again. And from then on his songwriting took the most drastic hit in quality.

Someone pointed out that the weight gain and his behavior would suggest that perhaps he went on some kind of anti-depressant or SRI and that the shift to overly positive lyrical content is as a result of that. The theory is that this could have been what ruined his edge.

It's an interesting thought that I haven't seen pointed out before. I mean he was totally gaunt and miserable during the Zwan to Zeitgeist era and then all of the sudden there's this total shift in weight and attitude. I think it's a very plausible theory

people said the same shit about the happy zwan songs. rainbows and positivity etc

he's anti medication of all kinds. so i doubt it.

he has always had strict control over his weight and in some old interviews he talked about gaining weight as a result of depression. or perhaps he even had an eating disorder and was working on not being restrictive anymore, if he was before.

also he pretends to be happy and jovial (or pretended, he's prob pretty happy with his new son etc), but writes shit like the devi ever blowup and how dare people give me 3 star reviews etc etc. he's never been happy for any length of time in the public spotlight.

Awesome insight. Of course I was here to witness the Devi Ever stuff, And lets face it, that shit provided more entertainment value than any movie or TV show ever could. So it really does disprove any theories that his cringe-worthy optimism in the lyrics was actually legit. So good call!

But then one question begs to be asked.... Why does he bother? The world fell in love with his angry, depressing, overly insightful lyrics... So if he's still a miserable jackass (like demonstrated in the Devi encounter), what's he trying to prove with all of this happy go lucky shit?

I get the theory that he was "trolling the audience" and that he was "self destructing with Adore" (which happens to be a million times more insightful or depressing than anything he's released since Machina)... But after awhile wouldn't you revert back to your natural abilities?

The 180 that this fucking guy has taken is truly disheartening.

Say what you guys will about GnR. But I was there watching Axl in person yesterday and the guy just exudes passion... With Corgan... Those days seem lonnnnnnnnng gone.

I know there's certain Youtube footage of Axl having a rough time on stage, but if you guys have checked any of the footage during the "real" reunion and even when he was with only hired guns the guy always gives it his best. That's a fucking awesome trait.

Half the time with Corgan nowadays he just seems like he's going through the motions, just wanting to get the pay-day and the merch sales.

There are a lot of shows from 2013-2014 where Axl was clearly going through the motions worse than Corgan.

I can understand if became a changed person and didn't want to create angsty stuff anymore, just wanted to share the love he felt, etc.

Maybe the Devi Ever stuff and the 3 star reviews stuff is when he stopped taking his meds. I dunno

juts for the sake of accuracy though, when you really listen to Zwan and read the lyrics you realize it's very dark and mournful music veiled under a wrap of sunshine pop.

I think it's denial and/or wanting to "fake it til you make it"

also while it seems like his depression etc resulted in a lot of sad feelings before, he has shown a lot more anger lately in public. it is possible if he is feeling less sad that he feels much better than before. like i am still moderately depressed but compared to being severely depressed i'm like happy as fuck

like i don't want to assume too much obviously, but i think the original theory that he's on antidepressants is very unlikely

He also put on some weight after SD, while writing and recording MCIS. And he was depressed as fuck back then.

In reality, Billy changed his diet and is now a vegan. It's really easy to gain weight when you're vegetarian/vegan if you go for the easiest options on the menu which is basically past.

He is 50 now, you're metabolism changes drastically when you pass the 40 mark.

All joking aside, there really is a lot of parallels between the groups. Probably more so than any other.

Yeah but from the Zeitgeist era to the Oash tour there was a pretty dramatic change. I get that with depression some people gain weight, but others lose weight and have a lack of appetite. He seemed really miserable and skinny during the Z era.

Oh yes, it certainly is. Someone who was more engulfed in the era than me must have some prime examples.

Others believed he we was wearing the makeup bronzer. Whatever the case was, it was certainly out of character.

that's true that some people lose weight, actually 'classic' depression has mostly vegetative signs like that. ironically, what is called atypical depression (which includes weight gain vs loss and hypersomnia vs insomnia) is more common these days (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/art...PMC2990566/#B9)

regardless people generally follow one pattern consistently

This is the first I've heard about spray tan too. But I've been ou of the loop, so to speak, if you know what I mean.

I forgot what else I was going to write.

so billy's got lots of STDs. Allegedly herpes and gonorrhea.
Obviously dating with STDs really sucks cause you've always got to use a condom
but billy doesn't like fucking with condoms, obviously - who does.
So when he finally finds a chick that ALSO has them or doesn't mind having his, he thinks he's golden. one in a billion he tells himself.
But obviously they always end up breaking up & that hits him the hardest.
How is he ever going to find another chick with herpes and gonorrhea?
his life must suck.
