I always found it amusing when kids at the time were accusing them of selling out with American Idiot, like how quaint, I remember when they were sell-outs for Dookie.

it's not like they were anything but a run of the mill punk rock revival group prior to becoming a mainstream major label rock band honestly was the best thing that could happen for their music

It's funny because Gilman was a pretty good scene and basically everyone that came out of it, save for like Rancid, was a more exciting band than Green Day

but fuzzy is only going to be familiar with the two that made $$$$$$

Tell me more about Gillman, I know nothing of this scene

In particular, I'm curious what it smelled like

Also, how were the haircuts? Were the parents properly scandalized?

And don't forget to tell: Was the face of the landscape of music altered forever? Did any laws get changed?

Yeah dude! I was frankly a little nervous because their last album (self-titled) was the first modern NOFX album that I really wasn't all that into, but this albums surpassed all expectations. I really think there is a lot of evolution here and a clearly darker tone with the most honest lyrics he's ever written.

I don't really think there was all that much contrived with Dookie. I mean if you listen to Kerplunk and 1039 smoothed out slappy hours then you'd realize that there was never really a conscious shift in sound once they signed with a major label.

Just cause music falls under the "pop" umbrella doesn't mean that it's automatically comparable you simpleton.

that's true and all but Green Day is still no better than Britney Spears

just because they play distorted guitars doesn't mean they have any merit as artistic music that's something you need to understand

Dookie was everyday music about/for a certain type of 13-year-old boy, and I can still sort of appreciate it for what it is. The thing that annoyed me about American Idiot was that it was a pretty shameless attempt at riding the zeitgeist of the Iraq War, like "this is our chance to be the cultural icons of this generation (or at least make a lot of money trying)."

Wrong. It's definitely an exuberant youthful album made by guys in their early 20's but it's not the Blink 182 kind of shit that was targeted for 13 year olds by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't think lyrics like these are exactly the type of thing that pre-teens and 13 year olds really connect with:

Do you ever think back to another time?
Does it bring you so down that you thought you lost your mind?
Do you ever want to lead a long trail of destruction
And mow down any bullshit that confronts you?
Do you ever build up all the small things in your head?
To make one problem that adds up to nothing
To me it's nothing

A gunshot rings out at the station
Another urchin snaps and left dead on his own
It makes me wonder why I'm still here
For some strange reason it's now
Feeling like my home
And I'm never gonna go

Now compare that with the Green Day knock-off that was designed to appeal to Green Days young fan base: Blink 182
:

I'll think about the times
She kissed me after class
And she put up with my friends
I acted like an ass
I'd ditch my lecture to watch the girls play soccer
Is my picture still hanging in her locker?

Get real man.

Green Day's average fan, at least at the release of American Idiot, was almost certainly 15 years old

Nah, cus the Green Day guy was a legitimate druggie and shit. blink-182 was singing about sodomizing dogs and shit.

I prefer Blink if I'm listening to this sort of stuff because they know their way around a sticky simple melody. But I relate more to Green Day guy's degenerate nature. But most of their album stuff is filler with some great stuff inbetween. They didn't have the pop sensibilities of blink-182.

I don't know anything about anyone in these bands. But in my experience, Green Day was definitely more for straight edge trust fund kids, Blink was for weed smoking hooligans who would vandalize public property and cause a scene in the mall and then run from security
