I liked Casablanca a lot but I can see where you're coming from. I expected to be blown away by this classic but my most immediate reaction was that casting him was an awful choice. His performance was fine but...why Bogart for Rick Blaine?

Not like say Barefoot Contessa where he was perfectly cast

Dope - 4/10

Did not like it although I really wanted to. It's like I could rate parts of it as high as 7/10 (like the cops searching lockers with drug dogs during the SATs while Nation of Millions blares), but other scenes just sunk it for me. Too much tell vs show. Reminded me of shit like Juno, where one can feel the writer sitting a little too close, nudging you with an elbow, "see me? I'm cool yes? Please? Do u like me yet?"

I'll try Barefoot Contessa. He was just too flat for Rick Blaine. There was no sardonic humour....no humour of any kind. And physically, next to Ingrid Bergman, he wasn't convincing as a love interest. Especially cast against Paul Henreid, who was dashing in comparison. There was no sexual tension between Bogart and Bergman at all. It was a disappointment after reading the screenplay first.

MAKE THIS BLOCKBUSTER A MOVIE YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO MISS") it's just not accountable by any measure anymore.

The Others with Nicole Kidman got like a 90% there, you can read me crapping all over it in tehbolly's confessional movie review ghost thread. BY MENNEN
I think the problem with Rotten Tomatoes is that it doesn't give an average score of the movie, it just says what percentage of reviewers said that the film wasn't abysmal.

8/10 people say this wasn't a bad movie, didn't have plot holes or give them cancer I guess = critical acclaim
6/10 loved it and thought it was challenging and made creative use of cinematic conventions, 4/10 thought it was pretentious = average film

I really wonder what WB was expecting when they put Snyder on this.

Audience score is a lot higher, but I wonder how many of those "reviews" are just by rabid fanboys who haven't even seen the movie yet, but have already decided that they love it out of fealty to the characters. Especially when many of them read like this:

Screw these critics! Paid by Disney/Marvel and they are all biased and garbage!

it amazes me that there were people out there who expected it to be good. it's zack snyder directing again, it's the sequel to man of steel, you've got freaking jesse eisenberg playing lex luthor. a recipe for disaster. seeing it tomorrow, and i'm 95% sure i'm going to walk out saying it was a dreary, convoluted mess of a film. the only thing i'm looking forward to at this point is ben affleck's portrayal of bruce wayne/batman. but (potential spoiler, if anyone cares) i've heard that batman kills people in this. fuck that.

my biggest question at the moment is will it be a nastier butchering of a property than watchmen was? i really hate zack snyder

DC needs to hire Disco King to write a Superman movie

Edit: or Warner Bros. or whatever, whoever has the film rights

I watched 75% of The Witch in the theater. Projector froze and died during the film, yay.
They gave us coupons that can be used with any movie 3d or not and free pop corn, but I really don't want to return to that specific theater (first time I went there)...

75% of the Witch: 5/5
Filmgoing experience: 0/5

If this is a Batman that kills people, kind of makes one wonder how he still has a rogue's gallery after all these years and why The Joker is still alive.

I have a lot of ideas for what I think thematically could be cool in a Superman film, as well as character arcs, but I've never really written anything creative before so I'm sure the actual mechanics would be clumsy and awful.

Yeah, it just seems to me that WB doesn't have enough faith in Superman as a character to try to do anything with him. Coming off of a Batman trilogy, they do one mediocre Superman film where he himself has no character development and he just wanders through scenes and shit happens to him. Then they're like "Get ready for the sequel! Superman 2: JK LOL Batman 4"

It was pretty much a direct adaptation, so there wasn't much Snyder had the opportunity to fuck up. It's watchable, I guess.

I just feel that the quality of a story doesn't come strictly from the plot, but from how the author develops themes through the conventions of the medium itself and how that reinforces the diegetic elements of the story. Watchmen is a good comic not just because of its plot, but the the way it plays with space, time, and symbolism through the paneling and layouts themselves, and how those reflect what's going on in the story.

Just transplanting it into another medium doesn't make it an automatically awesome movie. Of course, film is different from comics, so even if you can translate the content, you can't really translate the form. But that's why I think an interesting adaptation to film would be creative with the conventions that are unique to cinema to reinforce the themes and make it different from, but still true to, the comic. I dunno, Snyder turned it into a pretty straight-up action movie with martial arts and spurting blood and whatnot. It was okay, but not the sort of thing I felt compelled to see more than once.

I read something recently that was saying that the number of movies produced and made per year has been dropping by around 20,000 per year since at least 2009.

So what I'm saying is that superhero movies are almost all that's left. Just the lowest common denominator guaranteed money making dummy substance.

Superhero movies are to film what McDonald's is to the local burger joint and Starbucks is to the independent café.

Bloated monstrosities of vacuous mediocrity where virtually bottomless marketing budgets take the place of merit.

Batfleck v Supermannequin: Dawn of Cash Cow

Okay, I'll admit it...it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared it would be. Was it dreary? Yes. Was it convoluted? Yes. Is Henry Cavill's only qualification for being Supes the fact that he's a hunk who can fill the leotard? Yes. Does Wonder Woman feel completely tacked on? Yes. Did Warner Brothers try to cram too much into this movie in order to fast-track a Justice League movie? Of course. Was Jesse Eisenberg completely miscast as Lex Luthor? Dear God, yes.

Did it suck? Well...not really.

Ben Affleck was surprisingly solid as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and he and Jeremy Irons as Alfred pretty much carried the movie. I have a feeling had this just been a straight Batman movie, serving as a standalone story as well as a buildup to a Bats versus Supes movie it would have been better off. But of course there's money to be made. So instead you get a superhero movie that feels strangely simultaneously plodding and rushed, well-crafted but at the same time a bit messy, pulse-pounding but emotionally distant, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Not a disaster, but still a letdown. Enough was good to give me a little hope for the future of the DC Cinematic Universe, though. Lighten things up a little and trim the fat and the future may be bright.

C+

The biggest disappointment is still how bad Green Lantern was ruining that franchises reputation before it could even get to Sinestro and The Darkest Night story arch

they should have outright skipped GLs fairly boring origin story
