I've always wondered about this. I always assumed it was the same situation as with Mark Ignoffo playing the organ in Rhinoceros (i.e. some random person they knew who said they'd do it), and seriously doubt that Billy would have had his own flute just laying around. Someone would have had to let him borrow it, and then he would have had to practice enough to get it down right on the record...
Also, for some reason I thought it sounded like a recorder...but when I really listen, it doesn't sound quite thin and brittle enough for a recorder. It sounds like more lower harmonic frequencies can be heard than that... |

It's a recorder. I wouldn't doubt that Corgan played this. It sounds like whoever played it just learned how to play it a half hour before they recorded it.
