HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

William & Kate

A LOOK BACK AT THE ROYAL COUPLE’S MOST TENDER MOMENTS OVER THEIR EIGHT YEARS AS HUSBAND AND WIFE

Image

The world stood still on April 29, 2011 when Prince William, 28, and Catherine Middleton, 29, exchanged vows at London’s historic Westminster Abbey.

The newly created Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said “I do” in front of 1,900 guests, including foreign royal family members and heads of state. Thousands of well-wishers from around the world flocked to London to witness the spectacle and pageantry, and at least one million fans gathered outside Buckingham Palace (with Hello! Canada!) to witness the balcony kiss. Actually, romantic William kissed his radiant bride not once but twice!

Rather than vowing to obey her husband, Kate chose to follow the example set by William’s mother, Diana, 30 years earlier by promising to “love him, comfort him, honour and keep him” – paving the way for a lifetime of tender moments.

Today the couple, who first met as students at St. Andrews University, share countless special memories and tender moments from their 16 years together, eight of them as husband and wife. We look back at some of their most memorable moments so far. – SARAH CURRAN

Less than three months into their marriage, William flew to Canada for their first official overseas tour (affectionately known as the “honeymoon tour”). Here, they squeeze in a quick cuddle on Prince Edward Island after taking part in a dragon boat race at Dalvay-By-the-Sea (William’s team won!). Their love affair wasn’t just with each other but with their host country. “Canada has far surpassed all that we were promised ... we shall return,” vowed the young Duke of Cambridge.

In scenes that were surely repeated across the nation, William and Kate hugged in celebration after cyclist Sir Chris Hoy led Great Britain’s men’s sprint team to victory at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The athletic twosome were there to show their support for England’s athletes including William’s equestrian cousin Zara Tindall, who took home a silver medal. Through their commitment to the Games, the couple displayed not only their passion for sport but also for each other.

And baby makes three! Kate gazes lovingly at her husband as they introduce their first child, Prince George, at St. Mary’s Hospital on July 23. The nation had been waiting with bated breath for the first glimpse of William and Kate’s little prince born a day earlier. “It’s very emotional and such a special time,” said Kate. William jokingly added, “He’s got way more hair than me, thank God,” while also insisting that their baby had inherited his beautiful wife’s looks – “thankfully.”

The “Windsors of Oz” spread some royal sunshine during their three-week tour Down Under in the spring of 2014. The tour marked the couple’s first official trip with George, who quickly became the star of the show. The family of three started off in New Zealand before travelling to Australia. Displaying their ever-blossoming love for each other, William and Kate shared a rare private moment as the prince presented his wife with a flower in the kangaroo enclosure of Taronga Zoo. How romantic!

Years before Harry and Meghan held hands, William and Kate looked more in love than ever as they proudly introduced their second baby – a much hoped-for little girl – on May 2. Tucked up in her car seat, Princess Charlotte was carried to her elated parents’ vehicle by dad William, who helped Kate with his other hand before driving the family home. “It is the perfect result for the perfect couple,” said Kate’s uncle Gary Goldsmith, voicing the sentiment of fans around the world.

On their most colourful tour to date, a seven-day adventure in India and Bhutan, the duke and duchess surpassed all expectations, charming everyone they met – from street children to Bollywood superstars – and shining a light on some of the causes they care about so passionately. The couple were openly affectionate, sharing lots of laughs. Here, art history major Kate teases her husband about his artistic skills as he applies paint to an elephant statue.

William and Kate struck a nautical note, showing off their friendly rivalry on an official visit to Germany. In the university town of Heidelberg, the active couple channelled their competitive spirit in a rowing race on the River Neckar, each coxing a local amateur crew. “No pressure, but I do want to beat my husband,” a laughing duchess told her team. She lost the race but won the next best thing: a consoling hug from her handsome husband, who tried not to look too smug.

Now a party of five, the duke and duchess gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes after welcoming their youngest child, Prince Louis, on April 23 – just six days before their seventh wedding anniversary. Kate has said that William’s grandparents, the Queen and Prince Philip, are her relationship role models. “To have the support of your husband there by your side on [official] occasions, and behind closed doors as well, I think is really special,” she said in a documentary marking the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Date night! William and Kate exuded movie-idol glamour as they graced the BAFTAs – Britain’s equivalent of the Academy Awards. As the couple entered the auditorium, a hush fell over the entire gathering of stars, who silently rose to their feet to honour their royal guests. “It’s so quiet!” giggled Kate. Despite being surrounded by Hollywood royalty, she and William gravitated toward each other like two people who had just fallen in love – cementing their status yet again as one of the world’s most loved and cherished couples.
